Anyone have any experience using Hall Effect Sensors?

I made some custom pedals for my cab and I really want to avoid using Analog Potentiometers.

I found a video on youtube where someone used a Hall effect sensor(which was stationary) which was inserted in a circular magnet attached to the pivot point of the throttle pedal.  Really like this idea.

For the brake he used a pressure sensor.

I have all the components, just had a couple of questions.

I took some pictures but my iPhone is acting up, I'll reply in a few with some pics.....

Does the magnet need N & S pole .... I guess in your opinion what type of magnet is best suited for this?

Thanks for the quick reply btw :)
