Frustrated user need help wih Wheel/Roms filters are not working + HyperHQ crashes

Hi guys,  I'm a regular LB user who've decided to give it a try to HS by becoming Platinum Member. I knew if it was a little bit complicated to configure HS, but I didn't know it was THAT hard. I've spent half day trying to configure MAME and NES on HS and I didn't achieve it. I'm so frustrated...

As I've told you I've already added MAME and NES with RocketLauncher+HS but I have two issues (I guess they're some kinda bugs...-.-):

- HyperHQ crashes when you try to insert the rompath. Not a big deal, since you can actually edit the Mame.ini/nes.ini in Settings, but it's quite annoying... the one thing I would like to ask you about this is if I need to be careful about something in those INis (path, case sensitive or what else that I may do wrong...)

- The serious issue is related to the Wheel/Roms filters not working in HyperHQ. There's no way to make those filters work. Whenever I enter in HS with those filters activated Mame or NES wheels go back to the main wheel screen(they're not showing any games). Since it's quite and old bug, I'm sure and I hope there will be a simple fix or something to look for... I can't believe you are forced to see all Mame clones or unaivable games in NES to make those roms display....

and the bonus issue is related to HyperSync, but I guess is somehowe part of those two issues I listed above... In the NES system I just have 10 roms and even though RocketLauncher find those roms on HyperSync I'm forced to download all of the Nes Media Roms. What am I doing wrong? Why HyperSync doesn't just let me download only the media for the roms I really own?

Could you please guys help? Any suggestion, tips, tutorial (not video please!!!) would really appreciated. I've spent many hours watching videos to learn to setup HS and I'm really exhausted + frustrated.

It sounds like you may have taken a number of steps during setup that you didn't need to as well that could make life more difficult than it needs to be. If you follow the official guide, it specifically sets up both MAME and NES and agent47's advice will help with your filter issue.

If you really want written stuff there is some below but Avars first videos get you there quicker. Just gotta pause him! (No offence Avar :) )

This quick reference tutorial is grass roots stuff but still handy

This is section has some written stuff

afaik Hypersync only reads the database file not your rom folder. It will always download the full sets of files.

most people go for full sets of everything round here ;)

as as soon as Hyperspin can see all your rom files then the filters will work.

None taken haha :P I designed them with the pause function in mind, as I find in my experience with any video guide it's either a case of "ok pause -> do the thing -> unpause -> review as needed -> sweet I get it" or "ok I get it get to the next thing omfg," and opted for the former. Cheers!

Also, to your HyperSync question... it will download all media available to match the games defined in your XML. It doesn't look at which ROMs are actually present (I think this is coming when HyperBase goes live).

The solution is to either manually prune your media, or use Don's Tools (very easy) to create a custom XML with only those games.

Thanks for helping me guys! Actually right after I wrote this topic I've managed to find a good guide on goodroms(or something like that)  and I realized how to fix some issue. So finally I've been able to setup my NES rom collection on HS. Seriously this FE can be quite user un-friendly(or at least it's not intuitive the first times), but I'm amazed and quite satisfied with the final result. It looks like a real arcade frontend, LB pales in comparison... actually that's the reason why I decided to give a try to HS, even with the fancy themes LB looks like a mediacenter.

However, just like I've read on the tutorial, I'm fine with Don Tools 'workaround' since the custom xml with the real available roms works with hypersync. It's actually better in this way so you don't have to rely on filters. The lil downside is that you have to create custom xmls,  but after all you usually add roms to a system once or twice.

One thing I would like ask you guys is what Xml do you reccomend for Mame. I need one with no clones, mahjong, poker, slot machines. Also I would like to create subwheels with   genres and subarcade systems (cps, taito and so on). Still don't know how can I do that...

I really don't understand what are the benefits with using rocketlauncher, but almost every tutorial reccomended it. I guess it's because it allows more customization and/or per-game configurations. Just guessing... I don't have any clue...xD

Least but not last, what about the crash in HyperHQ? Is going to be fixed or is there a way to prevent this crash on win10?

Once again, thanks guys for both your tips and patience :)

RocketLauncher is supported and updated. It also adds a ton of features with everyone using it it's the best way to go.

mame wise the majority of xml's you will find are the latest version. So you ideally need to keep your mame romset up to date because the xml's are and the previous ones get lost quick. Check the database forum as Phulshuf is currently keeping mame db's updates with every combination you can think of.

hyperHQ no clue sorry. Other than adding it as an exception to your firewall/anti-virus is something I have seen posted as a fix

So, long time lurker and first time poster. After searching for an answer and not wanting to post repeated questions that already had related threads I found this one which seems appropriate. All of the advice listed so far is great for MagicalFrank and honestly you can get by for 99% of the setups with watching Avar and SimplyAustin's video tutorials just split your screen in half and work along with them. However I know the frustration about the HyperHQ filter settings. I've followed all the tutorial steps and it works great, however I just came across a problem in the same vein as MagialFrank's, perhaps it will help someone.

After following all the steps I did create xmls via RL so that I could instantly trim my rom sets, however after getting things up and running I decided to start adding more functionality and that's when I realized I should have just used the official xml databases from HyperList. My reason for genre sorting, I could care less about the publish date unless whoever I'm playing with recalls what year we first played a game in the arcade, but being able to sort by genre has immensely helped me create my favorites xml files. So that being said I'd download and have your official xmls ready but go ahead and test with RL generated ones just to see how things are coming along.

My only problem has arisen as I have gone back and added to the official xmls, I have been adding translated roms and some rom hacks like Super Metroid Redesign. What I have noticed is that my translated roms for some reason disappear when I add the HyperHQ Roms only filter. I couldn't find any answer I checked naming conventions, I even went as far as copy/paste for all the titles between logos, videos, rom and xml so that for whatever reason I could rule out the issues with exact title matching (we all paid attention in the videos when they warned us it needs the exact title, caps and all right?).

So I am a little bewildered that despite following the proper naming convention the filters do not work in the way I thought they did. Anyone with more experience have some insight as to how HyperHQ matches the roms within the defined paths? I thought I understood but clearly I am missing something, because the only other subwheel to give me issues with the Roms only filter is Sega Dreamcast. When the filter is on with the official database, extensions specified (in this case, gdi,cdi,7z,zip) and subfolders being searched HyperSpin will not go into the wheel and just reverts back to the main menu wheel. Its the oddest thing, I swear it was filtering the other night but I was probably delirious from working on the project for so long.

Anyway, sorry to rant, hope this makes since to someone else for an answer, or perhaps my missteps help you avoid small, but very time-consuming errors as you set your systems up. I'll post some pictures as the cabinet finishes up, as well as the Zapper to AimTrak conversion I'm working on.

Thanks for everyone's hard work on the tutorials and content here, I would be banging my head into a wall instead of playing if it wasn't for you guys!

You are absolutely correct, I noticed this when I setup Lynx for Roms only, all of my roms were lowercase and the xml had proper grammar, meaning I was in for tedious renaming. Unfortunately I have verified that my extensions and cases are all correct, I went as far as copying directly from the xml to remove my eyes from the list of problems. I even added "gdi,GDI" to my extensions parameter at one point thinking I was going to outsmart the case issue.

Anyway since my last post I fixed my SNES issue at least, I'm not sure why but my manually added translated roms in the xml I had used (ENG) to denote them, on a whim I changed them all to (USA) similar to the working files, and then BAM they all show up with the filter on. Not sure why that's the case but I have ceased caring about that system at this time since it all works and all that's left is my final favorites xml.

Your reply did get me thinking, I have an atypical folder structure in my Dreamcast setup. Its a Roms Folder, then within it there are subfolders named for each game ( I did this due to the additional tracks for gdi files). At the time running nullDC it seemed like a slick plan and launching in RL works great, my only issue from there is that ESC no longer works to exit nullDC, but I'm sure that will be my primer into autohotkey. All tangential thought aside I tried keeping Roms filter on and moving 1 game with all it's tracks into the Roms folder rather than its own subfolder, and then it shows up.

So obviously the "Search Subfolders" option isn't functioning correctly in HyperHQ so my question is now how to fix that, or alternatively do you have a better suggestion for folder structure that doesn't leave me with multiple track 01.raw's needing to be renamed and then not being used by the correct gdi...

Thanks again, and hopefully this ends up solving someone else's issues as well.

Well, I was hoping it wasn't going to come to that, I absolutely love being able to add games later on without much additional alterations. Regardless I've gotten this far with trimming and editing I just wish the searching subfolders option worked the way it sounds like it should. RocketLauncher has no trouble with the subfolder method but its a different beast, too bad the generated xmls from RL don't pull data from existing ones, and I have yet to find a way to combine and trim via a 3rd party program.

Thanks again

It's often simplest and most convenient to just use a fuzzy logic matching tool to pair down your wheels so you've only got the ones matching your roms left. Then you can use the Wheels Only filter and it will serve as a Roms Only filter as well, without having to worry about the sub-folders issue.
