vaderag
Hi everyone! So, i've taken a good few months out from doing my Hyperspin system as I've been spending the time instead designing my side art for my actual cabinet. That is now off at the printers (yay!) so i'm back to Hyperspin... Turns out, much of my knowledge on how to do things has evaporated Thankfully, most of the systems are already set up, and I remember how to sort through the artwork etc. BUT (and here is the question) - what I want to do is create a separate, main wheel entry, for Light Gun games. (I don't have a light gun, but played some with a mate's trackball recently and decided they worked sufficiently that I would like to have the menu entry on my cab) Sounds simple right... Well, i deleted all the games that weren't being used in my main list (don't worry, i have a full backup of all the roms, just unsorted), so what i'm trying to do is take a MameXML (from HyperList), filter out all the lightgun games, create a hyperspin xml with just those games, extract those games from my mame set to a separate folder and create a new system with it. I think i can figure out the latter half of that but I can't for the life of me remember what tools i used for the first half when I did my mame set around a year ago Can anyone help jog my memory?! (Side question - is it worth considering getting the latest mame set and version and re-doing that entirely?!) Thank you in advance!

You'll want to find an xml that matches your version in the downloads section or in the MAME thread in the Database section of the forum. After that you should be able to use Don's Filter HyperList to filter for games with a genre of Gun. As for the age old question of whether you should update MAME, that's largely preference. If the version you have isn't that old and everything is working fine you may just want to stick with what you have. You can check the release notes on the MAME site to see if any of the changes interest you. If you have an older set it would probably be better to update. I update my set every month, but some people prefer to just stick with what they have since it works. If you're jumping back in and messing with MAME lists I would personally say just go ahead and update to the most recent while you're at it. But again, that's up to you. Thanks mate - good to see you're still around - remember you being super helpful when I was last looking into this. So will Gun always be Lightgun? I.e. i might put Contra in a gun genre (since it has guns in it...) Also, do you recon i'm better doing it as a genre rather than a separate wheel? Pro's/cons? Think i will update my mame sets... doubt i'll keep on top of it, but may as well go in fresh with the latest set... the thought of going through and manually sorting the good clones etc is filling me with fear tho I also hear that the lastest version of mame uses different filters etc, so might need to re-do them... If you want to make an actual wheel for light gun games you just make a new system for it in HS/RL called whatever you want. then take your MAME XML (new or old) and take away everything that isn't a lightgun game. Personally I would simply take a copy the Gun Genre xml from MAME and rename it to MAME.xml. There, now you have a MAME xml with nothing but all gun games. Then in Rocketlauncher I would combine all the American Laser games gun games into the system (as well as any Naomi/Atomiswave etc... light gun games). And BOOM! You have an all light-gun system wheel. I would name the wheel Gunslingers myself. One thing though, the part I bolded... Why did you delete roms out of your MAME folder? And you don't need to move roms into a new folder or have second copies. Leave all the roms in their already existing folders and simply point the emulators/RL to those same folders. It's only going to show the games in your database(s) anyway, so there's no need to split the roms up. For example I have a ton of manufacturer wheels (Nintendo Classics, SNK, Williams etc...) and all of them pull their roms from the single, main, MAME rom folder. You don't even to make copies or move around all your artwork/themes/videos etc... if you symbolically link those systems all back to the same folder. EDIT: Yeah and only light gun games would ever go into the Gun genre. Contra is a shooter or action etc...

So, the reason I deleted them was because I was trying to save space - was running out on the machine and the CHDs take a lot of space (esp since 90% of them I wasn't using). However, I've now got a new HDD so reevaluating. Also decided that the machine doesnt need to have newer systems on, so that'll clear some space too. Original plan was to have all the way up to current gen, but then i decided that plugging in controllers to an arcade cabinet somewhat defeats the purpose of an arcade cabinet, and what's the point with an 8-way stick. Might have a couple of newer gen games that play with a stick, but gonna take out a bunch of the crap.
Metalzoic
Yeah. I decided to keep my cab to only Arcade games and modern PC games that fit. So I deleted the 10's of thousands of console games I had. Now it has MAME arcade games split out into manufacturers. LaserDisc Classics. Naomi & Atomiswave. Sega Classics made up of the model 2, 3 etc... Pinball Arcade wheel. Modern Classics which is PC games. Vector games using AAE #2. etc... The only console games I have on it are the ones needed in my Ghosts'n Goblins collection wheel, but they're the exception
