Creating genres from custom XML?

Wondering if anyone can help me with a good process for creating custom xmls for sorting to genre. I've searched and searched but cannot find what I would expect would be a simple answer?

Let's say I have 1000 Commodore 64 titles out of the 8000 or so that are listed in the official XML. I realise I can go ahead and create a new hyperlist with dons hyper tools for just the roms that I have, but I also realise that by doing so the new hyperlist will be devoid of any of the rom info such as genre and developer etc.

The end result that I am chasing is that I can have my 1000 title xml which i could then split down from that xml into genres. Is there some clever stuff that can be done or an application in particular that can do this?

In cases where I am missing just a few roms for systems it's easy enough to just search and edit them out of the existing xml, but in a case like this where it is 1000 roms out of 8000 i'm not familiar with the best approach.

I apologise if there is a simple answer for this, i've had no trouble working through stumbling blocks so far with some searching, but i've failed to find any info on this or any programs that help.

I'm sure i am not the first to come across this problem.

Well I just discovered the wheels filter roms only function in hyperhq coincidentally with an unrelated thread below. I guess I can take advantage of that to just hide the extra 7000 roms though it's not the most elegant solution.

Try using Don's Filter HyperList utility. Use the full (say 8000 games) system xml as the "source" xml in the top Required Settings and in the Optional section, use your cut down (1000 game) xml as the "output" xml. When you hit scan, it will automatically mark the games in your cut down xml to output and include the other xml information from the "source" xml. Then hit the "Export Output List" button at the bottom. This will create an xml with only your games and all of the information that was in the official list. Suggest you save to an alternate location and don't overwrite any original xmls till you verify the results.

Then use the Split HyperList utility to split into genres xmls.

Magic!

Thanks guys that's exactly what I was after!

The tutorial stuff I had found for the filter program was doing different stuff and I'd kind of written it off as only being useful for MAME for some reason so I guess I misunderstood it's purpose at the time.

Thanks again, this was one of the last things I was stuck on. hopefully this helps someone else in the future if they find this thread.
