What's the benefit of using mame emulator instead of retroarch

I currently use retroarch for Mame, I originally was going to use the mame emulator but the guide I was following said I needed to download the Roms/no nag and chd files. The chd files were 2tb and I couldn't justify taking up the hard drive space when it wasn't needed for retroarch. Now I am curious though, do I need the chd files and is there any benefit with mame over retroarch.

Which MAME core are you using with RetroArch? There have been some serious improvements over the last year that you may be missing out on.

The 2 TB chds are for the software lists; mostly optical media for e.g. NeoGeo-CD. You won't need those for arcade emulation.

@phulshof not sure which version I am using tbh and can't look as I am on holiday. Having issues with retroarch emulating dreamcast, 3do and is ropey on n64, so I thought I might just setup individual emulators instead.  Mame with retroarch is very stable, but doesn't save high scores and it's doesn't seem easy to setup individual controls for games.

MAME standalone is quite easy to set up, but be aware that MAME uses a different bezel set than RetroArch. I'd get 0.200 with matching roms if I were you. For HyperSpin, go with non-merged or split (I prefer non-merged these days) roms, and a merged chd set.

I tested them and i decided to stay in mame, because mame is easy to config than retro !!

Mame is focuses on arcade games from long ago, that mean the developers of that emulator each year make some fixes !!
