Themes?

Talking of classic case mods and the Shield TV. I helped a friend put an STV into a broken old skool NES. No offence but it will put your RPI NES to shame (see below).

Hyperspin is the "Grand Daddy" of front ends. Yes there are more options now but many of them use Hyperspin media assets (like the wheel art and video snaps). Most impressive looking Attract mode or Launch Box themes are in fact "cinematic themes". That is to say a video showing a Hyperspin theme at work, although to be fair content creators are doing original work too. We can actually use these "Cinematic themes" in Hyperspin as well, so it goes both ways!

If you want to do an Arcade cabinet build. My honest advice would be to ditch the RPI. You might not be aware but the more modern authentic arcade cabinets are actually PC's!

You don't need a "Ninja" gaming PC to do the Arcade systems. Look at the spec of the Taito Type X arcade machines as an example. So hunt for an old PC to buy 2nd hand. The Intel i5 2400 machines go very cheap, an i3 (sandy or Ivy) CPU would arguably be better. The i3s are clocked faster than the basic i5 and being a dual core doesn't really matter for most emulators. Then you can look to do more recent Arcade systems for your cab.

I've just finished adding NesicaXlive to my modest Hyperspin PC (which is an Ivybridge i3 3220). I'd already done the Taito Type X machines, I'm working on adding the Sega Europa R and Ring systems at the moment. We don't emulate these games, as the Arcade system is a PC. We use a loader to launch the original files ripped from the Arcade machine.

Check out Planet Geekdom's recent YouTube videos. You'll get an idea of how cool your cabinet could actually be and more importantly, how to do it too with Rocket Launcher working behind Hyperspin.

All the best with it

No offence taken, I bow to your majesty! The NES was never a media centre, so that breaks some of the nostalgia I have for the system IMHO. I use other devices for that purpose, and have kept my modest build to just NES games for that reason. What you have done with the HS STV build does look very attractive though.

Thanks for the advise on the arcade build, I have looked in to old i5 PC's for my full size build and is something I'm going to look in to for sure. Looks like Planet Geekdom has me covered for all my tutorial need there, good recommendation.

I'll be using the RPI that I have to finish off my current arcade emulation stick project that will end up looking very similar to this...073679f98f6c5f8cfc1ea9bdd7c08d5a.jpg.744578a3498a522250409b398297991f.jpgI have all of the hardwear sorted and was just looking to get a thematic image up and running to go in it. Looks like I have all of the tools that I need for now to achieve this.

Thanks again for all of your advise and patience,

I have ZERO love for Nintendo, I'm a SEGA boy at heart ;)

Even if an RPI was put in that NES case, I would have done the same thing with Kodi. Many people wanted to know how I had added KODI to the wheel, for my RPI Attract mode builds back in the day. It makes it a more versatile device,  so is a clever thing to add in.

If you go the PC route, it's Rocketlauncher you want to learn to use to the fullest. Many people think Launchbox is an easier frontend to configure than Hyperspin. Although advanced Launchbox users will integrate Rocketlauncher into it.

This thread is now going off topic, so I'll leave it at that.
