new power switch doesnt turn PC on

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Heres my current setup so you can understand what Im working with.

-8 socket power strip with an extended switch (opened the strip up, added extra wiring to route the switch so it can be accessed on the outside of the cabinet)

-everything is connected to this except the TV... so I turn it on and it powers up the tv, speakers, and the marquee

-computer needs to be manually turned on by pressing its power button

-its located inside my cabinet so its a pain to access and shut off

SO to the point of this thread I bought one of those master/slave power strips and I wanted to wire the current switch up to my computer so I press the button, it turns the computer on and then turns everything else on that is connected to the slave portion.

I opened up my computer to find the power switch is a simple 2 wire setup so i cut them and wired them up to the 2 wire switch located on my cabinet.

once I did this and pressed the switch the computer would turn on for a few seconds then power off.

I reversed the polarity but it did the same thing

Making sure I didnt screw anything up I wired up the old computer switch and everything worked fine.....

I cant find anything stating volts/amps on the switch I am trying to use. Does this sound like the switch has too much power or is not giving enough power?

I apologize for the rambling hopefully it all makes sense.

Here is a picture of the setup inside my computer.

Thanks for any help

Newer computers look for a momentary button press to turn on. Your flip switch is the equivalent of holding the power button down on the computer. Not sure what you need to get around that maybe some sort of relay. Mine I just wired to a button on my control panel to turn the comp off and on. You need to simulate a 5 second button press to turn on.

Any power settings in the BIOS that would let you hold the switch to power the PC up? If there is you would only have to change the switch to a push button, change the power settings in the BIOS and reinstall the flip switch.

Thank you for the advice guys, went to radio shack and found a switch that worked perfectly.

I do have one last 2 part question: There are quite a few little kids at the house that the arcade is at so will it cause the computer harm if they click the switch multiple times before it starts up or when shutting down?

Also in general is it harmful to the computer to turn it off and on multiple times in a day?

Thanks!

Yes that would cause a few problems.. Luckily here's the solution

Push button covers :top:

I shut my computer off every night and several times throughout the day and it has been running for over 4 years, but some people say that doing it can cause the solder to crack by repeated heating and cooldowns caused by turning the PC on and off. But as long as you have adequate cooling for the motherboard I don't think this should be a problem.

(You could always set the PC to shut down into standby mode (Hibernate or Sleep, using the power options in control panel) if your afraid of multiple power presses. Or even a held press I think using the Bios).
