Hi guys,

I am a new member here and this is my first post. I donated to the cause to become a gold member simply as a thank you for this vast pool of info and knowledge you all carry.

I have hyperspin up and running with Mame running flawlessly down to the artwork and sample videos ect. I just cant seem to set up any other emulator.. I have followed multiple walk thru tutorials on here step by step time and time again with no avail. I started at the top so the Atari 5200 was first on the list. I have Mess set up thru Hyperspin and have all the values in hyperlaunch ect set properly to the guide.

I have put all Roms in the correct path and corrisponded with the settings so it knows where to find them. When i do a Rom audit in Hyperspin all the roms come back RED and not found... When trying to launch in hyperspin i get the same error "no rom matching found in provided path" (they are all there)

again i am sorry to be such a noob. I have searched and nothing has solved my issue. I had the same problem when trying to set up NES and SNES. I think if i can get over this hump i will be on my way to getting the full potential out of Hyperspin as well of the feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction. any help would be greatly appretiated! :)

Cheers!

First off, thank you for the fast reply

Sorry to sound like an even bigger noob. But do you mean the setup with Git and Tortois with the Hyperspin-3 folder ect. ?

If so yes i have. :)

Yes I have Hyperlaunch HQ. I have never updated all the Modules. Thank you for this. I will try it again after work. Everywhere i read is about how easy this all is to set up. Not the case for me... i spent all weekend looking up and reading with nothing helping my issue... very frustrating to know you are right on the brink.

It seems like you might just need to add the rom extension to the Mess global emulator. It would explain why HLHQ won't find your roms. Find whatever extension your roms have... (its been a while but maybe .a52?), go to global emulators, find mess, double click, and find the line that lists all of the extensions, and add your rom extension there if it isn't.

is it anything to do with this part of the install? "One additional thing you’ll need to run MESS is the Atari 5200 system bios file called A5200.zip" i read this but dont see where to get it or where to put the file? do i extract in a certain place or just put the zip into a specific folder?

Thank you for the reply/Help

by Rom extensions do you mean the Path

or like zip|7z ect?

If this ^ i do have it set in Global-emulators-mess-rom extensions. :)

Yes, you need to put the bios file in your mess/roms folder. It may already be there depending on where you got your emu. Going forward, just some advice, but I would make a folder in hyperspin called roms and put my roms there in subfolders, like C:/Hyperspin/Roms/Atari 5200 because for a few emulators their native "roms" folder is actually for bios files. Mess is one of them.

BUT that doesn't explain why your roms are red in the hyperlaunchHQ audit. Now I'm wondering two things... are your roms zipped, and are they named correctly. Mame roms are usually named correctly automatically. The Atari 5200 romset you have may not be following the no-intro naming convention. You have to make sure your roms are named the same as the XML in your database folder. You can alternately just look to see if your roms are spelled the same as the audit in HLHQ. If they aren't, download Don's Hyperspin Tools (you will need this program) and use it to rename your roms according to the xml in your hyperspin/databases/atari 5200 folder.

Edit: that sounds complicated but it isn't. Open Don's Rom Renamer, where it asks for your xml, just navigate to the above folder, and where it asks for your rom folder, just navigate to your rom folder. The program will do the rest.

Edit Edit, one last thing. If your roms are zipped, the archive must also have the same correct name as the rom file itself.

Like: "ballblazer (USA).7z" with the file inside named "ballblazer (USA).a52"

Scanned via the Module updater

Total Modules 133

Need updating 0

Checked the rom extention mentioned above and all is correct. Hyperlaunch HQ still found 0 of 72 roms..

I GOT IT!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much everyone!! my problem was as stated above. placing the rom folder into the generic hyperspin\rom\atari

You guys are too good! will this be the same as to why NES or SNES wouldnt recognize. Putting the roms into this new folder?

Got the roms to match and recognize in Hyperlaunch. now when i go to fire that game up in Hyperspin it loads then crashes out back to the menu.

Yes, all of your roms have to be named EXACTLY like the xml. When you do an audit in HLHQ, the list that comes up is actually written in an xml file again in your hyperspin/database/atari 5200 folder. You CAN make your own xmls to match your rom names, but it is MUCH preferred to just change your roms to match the xml. Hyperspin for the most part uses No-Intro naming. MAME is an exception to this, and a few others like Commodore 64, Zinc etc.

The above looks good, but you also need to make sure the unzipped rom file has the same correct name as well. (However, if your rom zips are spelled correctly, they should show up in the audit regardless of what it in them, you just wouldn't be able to launch of the file inside isn't spelled correctly).

Edit: google is your friend, but some stuff should only be discussed in the gold member forums.

yes running outside of hyperlaunch it says to specify rom path in mess.ini . i cannot find that files location... i read how to create but cant get these steps to work. When i type in the path in cmd.exe it gives me the same message "check the rom path" before i even get the chance to create config....

You can't download, but U can create...

open cmd.exe and go to folder with mess (eq. cd c:\mess\)

type "mess -createconfig"* and voila.

Another pro tip- having trouble with mess? HyperlaunchHQ tells you the other emulators you can use. No reason not to have as many emulators as possible to get better compatibility per system. I personally get black screens with mess way too often and barely use it.

Edit: if mess is anything like mame... how to explain this...

When you use the createconfig command in mame, its usually something like mame -createconfig

However, this only works if the EXE file is named "mame" not "mame64" or "mamenonagdirectinput". I'm really not sure about mess but you can try renaming the exe to "mess" if it isn't. OR maybe even changing the command to reflect whatever the exe file is named. I did this with mame by renaming the exe and it worked fine.

You should be able to shift-right click inside the mess folder and that'll give you the option to open the command prompt there?

for something exlpained to be so easy on so many posts. Hyperspin setup can be so extremely difficult and frustrating. Me and an IT friend have spent 2 days and still cant get Atari to work....

It really is easy, once you know what you're doing. The initial curve is quite steep, depending on how your brain works.

I would recommend trying a different emulator, it's possible MESS and your system don't get along. I have personally always had issues with Mess...

Try a simple emulator first like nestopia or kat5200 or vba-m. Then graduate yourself to the more complicated ones like mess or higan or fusion.

Do the easy stuff first so you don't get as frustrated quickly.

The basic steps for every emulator simplified

1.) Get Roms (hopefully legally)

2.) Rename Roms to match names in HyperList XMLs. You can use Don's Rom Renamer. There is a certain website that shall not be linked to that has the majority of roms already renamed

3.) Test a rom on an emulator

4.) Get rom working on the emulator

5.) If missing, add emulator's system to hyerspin using HyperHQ .

6.) Add emulator to HyperLaunchHQ

7.) Add path to roms in HyperLaunchHQ

8.) Test rom in HyperLaunchHQ

9.) Test rom in HyperSpin

10.) Do the next emulator
