Can't get Atari Lynx working in Hyperspin (MESS)

I set it up and I can run it from MESSUI, plus I can run it from the command line if I'm inside the MESS directory. For some reason I can't run it from outside the MESS directory which means it won't run from Hyperspin. See below, why does this happen?

C:\>"C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\MESS\mess64.exe" lynx -cart "C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\MESS\Atari Lynx\Ninja Gaiden (USA, Europe).zip"
lynx.bin NOT FOUND
ERROR: required files are missing, the system cannot be run.

C:\>cd Hyperspin/Emulators/MESS

C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\MESS>"mess64.exe" lynx -cart "C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\MESS\Atari Lynx\Ninja Gaiden (USA, Europe).zip"
lynx.bin ROM NEEDS REDUMP
WARNING: the system might not run correctly.
Average speed: 100.00% (7 seconds)

C:\Hyperspin\Emulators\MESS>

Running from inside the MESS directory is fine. Running from outside specifies files are missing.

I suggest using mednafen for Lynx.

You can run a 32-bit based program from within a 64-bit Windows operating system. The support for the 32-bit architecture is included.

Try running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2.

EDIT: Oops! Disregard please. Forgot it was command-line only. :(

Mednafen works fine in 64-bit. Nothing should happen when you just click on it, it expects a rom file. Easiest way to start is to drag a rom file to mednafen.exe.

When I double click the Mednafen executable, nothing happens.

Mednafen has no gui, so running it directly will do nothing. Just run it through HS with the correct module.

Get MedGUI, set up your options. Then you should be able to use Mednafen no problem for Lynx. Works a lot better than MESS. I try to avoid MESS at all costs.

Posted

No, I figured it out. I needed to have LynxImage.iso (the BIOS) in the Mednafen root directory. Works perfect now for Lynx and TurboGrafx 16.

I am also trying to get Lynx to function correctly and have read the above, with some understanding. I will admit I do not know everything, what I have accomplished is from lots of reading (and searching), plus trial and error.

I went with the mednafen route as suggested, i also downloaded the medgui just in case. I downloaded all from the links supplied here. I used Clrmamepro to rename my rom set, set up HyperHQ just as I have done before. When I select a game in Hyperspin, it tells me "Atari Lynx is an invalid system name or mednafen.exe is not supported yet". Im not getting an error for the usual rom path, etc. What am I doing wrong?

Switch to hyperlaunch v2.13. You won't have to deal with that error anymore. It uses modules instead that you get off HyperList.

I second this. I recently made the switch. I admit that I was hesitant at first. I thought it would be a disaster setting everything up again. Even the hardest systems like PC Engine CD with Ootake were a breeze to set up and work flawlessly. It's as simple as drag, drop, and rename. Occasionally you'll need to tweek some settings in the module, but there are very detailed instructions to guide you through it. So far, the only problem I'm having is with the Daphne module making my badlands game lag when it wasn't lagging previously.

I was, and still am, terrified of making the switch. Once I grasped the concept of my current setup I was able to do my other systems using HL1.0. It took many, many hours to get where I am now.

Its like standing on a cliff, I really dont want to jump. If I do its supposed to make things easier, but I am still hesitant on not surviving.

It's not a life or death situation. If you need to go back (attach a bungee cord before you jump) and backup your hyperlaunch.ahk and exe first.

I know what you mean. I'm a close of follower of that saying: "If it aint broke, don't fix it".

However, if it's reassuring at all, you can always just back up your Hyperlaunch 1.0 setup. You won't lose anything at all while you test out Hyperlaunch 2.X.

It will be broke when HS2 comes out. It's better to be proactive then reactive.

I just started switching about 30 minutes ago. Obviously MAME works since it was incorporated in the zip file of HL 2.13. Trying to read through 117 pages for a good tutorial is very frustrating. For someone like me who does not know all the lingo and programming/code writing jargon, I think a new HOW TO or TUTORIAL should be made for systems other than MAME. Atleast use more than one system when explaining the process. Im getting errors and I am trying to follow the short directions from BadBoyBills first post. All I have working is MAME, and thats because it came completed. I have a headache. NES came with the zip folder to, but it dont work. Keeps telling me it cant find the .AHK file thats in the directory it says its not.

Like this:

Step3.

Make a new folder in you install director called Modules. Each module goes into a folder of the system name. So:

Modules\MAME\MAME.ahk

That is easy to understand. But for "system name", am I calling it the actual console make name or the emulator system name?

Posted

Edit :

Each system is asking for a different .AHK file than the ones you guys made. Atari gives me the error "Cant find C:\Hyperspin\Modules\Atari 5200\Atari 5200.ahk"

If my trial and error is correct here, For Neo Geo I would add Modules\Neo Geo\MAME.ahk *BUT* I have to rename MAME.ahk to NEO GEO.ahk for it to work. Or atleast thats what I did to not get errors so far.

If I can figure out how to do this correctly for every system, I would be more than happy to write a retard proof "how to" for people on this.

I still cant get Mednafen to work for Atari Lynx. I run WIN7 64, I even tried changing it to run as XP SP2 & SP3 with no luck.

All modules for each system are downloaded from Hyperlist (see that tab at the top of the site?)

You only need to read the first post of that thread. It explains everything in the simplest of terms. When you add each new system, you'll need that system's module. Again, download it from Hyperlist. Each system has that green AHK button on the right and that will get you the modules.

System name means the name you put in HyperHQ. So for something like Sega Genesis, the system name would be "Sega Genesis" and NOT "Fusion".

Don't bother with MedGUI. You won't need it once you get the proper module for Mednafen to run Atari Lynx.

I downloaded every module I needed from the link in the original thread for each system, which gives multiple ahk files for which ever emulator your running. I got that stuff done and so far everything works correctly except Lynx. The part that is missing in the "simplest of terms" is renaming the .ahk file to the actual system name. Unless I am the only person who had to do that, that is what I had to do.

c:\Hyperspin\Modules\Sega Master System\Sega Master System.ahk <=-formely known as fusion.ahk

Some how, and I dont know how, after I added the Lynx wheel art I started Hyperspin. Went to Lynx to confirm the art was good to go. For giggles I clicked a game and it launched. However, it seems to launch the game at the ending credits. Like you beat the game. It just goes and goes and goes. Every game does this. I did this after I posted the error message.

**EDIT**

I shut my desktop down for the night and turned it back on this morning. I tested to see if a restart would fix a problem or an error somewhere. Some Lynx games are working, which is great, and I still dont know what was up with all the error messages. However, now when I click on a Lynx game in Hyperspin the Windows Persmission box pops up on if I am allowing this action. This is kind of odd. Should I just delete all the Mednafen files and reinstall it again?
