[Paid ?] Adding Coin Acceptor support (Specially EMP800's)

Hello.

I work for a arcade / amusement machines company and we currently own some machines (let's call them Play Stations) that are basically a PC with W7 and a custom frontend (which is quite similar to hyperspin tbh) with some PC games loaded.

Sadly, the company that manufactures them (well the software part of it) has TERRIBLE support and considering the machines are quite expensive, we are looking for a viable alternative.

The machines do not run anything other than a dozen of PC games and a dozen of MAME Roms, for which we do have a license.

HyperSpin, as I've said before, is quite similar and would work pretty much perfectly if it had coin acceptor support but with a difference. The coins would not input "credits" in games but add playing time instead. The PC games as you know do not work with credits, and the MAME roms are setup for "free play".

So after speaking with my boss, he agreed that we would be able to pay for development of coin checker mechs support into Hyperspin if it is a possibility. All it has to do is:

  • Correctly interface with the EMP800 coin acceptor.
  • Provide a configuration dialog to specify what coins are accepted, and the price per hour.
  • Show the amount of money in the coin box.
  • Show an overlay on the front end with the time left and the indication of price per hour
  • Beeping support when time is running low (let's say 1 minute but it could be configurable as well)

Is this a possibility? If not, why?

Why would it be illegal? We have licenses for the games the machine runs and for the underlying Windows OS. We're simply looking for a viable alternative to our existing frontend.

Note that we are based off Portugal, and the laws here might (and probably are) be different than the ones in the US / UK or wherever you are.

Actually, Portugal is quite lacking legislation in this area. As long as we do not charge per life or use the normal "credit" system (1 coin gives x tries, essentially turning it into a game of luck) we don't even need the license that's needed lets say for a pinball machine.

Again, the program would continue to be free even if what I asked was added (and it's development paid for). Now if it's against the creator's wishes, then of course I'll have to respect that and start looking elsewhere.
