wyldside74 Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Hi...I have a question, let me say im new to the Hyperspin systems. I have a Bartop aracde machine that I have been using for the past two years and I would like to start adding games and other systems. It has the older version of hyper and launch on it. So After taking the back off the back it has a very tiny hard drive 60 gig only so im very limited. I started building a new system on my laptop and its becoming over 60 gigs so I was going to get a External hard drive and use that. So what Im wondering how can I use a external harrdive via usb? The bar top is already configured to boot and go directly to hyperspin. This is where I would need help. Then with Remapping the joys and buttons. Can I use a external to go directly into hyperspin. I checked the startup folders in Docs and settings and there is no hyperspin. So Im assuming the computer is in a shell (im not familar with that at all) I read that online thats what made me look in to it.
rust2dust Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Just pony up for an internal hd. The cost is about the same as an external. Also get an external for a backup....just sayin...
THK Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 Yup, make a direct copy of your current drive on a new 4tb one (plug em both into a desktop) and preferably make another copy on a 2nd new 4tb. That way you have a lot of headroom for more systems and a backup drive in case something went wrong and you'd be wishing you had. ..........................back with a vengeance........................
wyldside74 Posted February 15, 2015 Author Posted February 15, 2015 I actually would rather a internal so I didnt have to have the external on my machine. This is what I'm consirned about though. The Bartop runs xp and its probably pretty old mother board considering the harddrive on it now has a date stamp of 2007 and it's IDE. Now if I get a new internal that is sata can I use a adapter that's sata to IDE? It also runs the old version of hyperspin. What I did was copied the drive now to a external to try and add systems but it wont run certain ones says its not supported. So I'm figuring it has to be a complete overhaul. Would I have to clone the drive thats in there now since there is a operating system on it and then start rebuilding? Do I have to shell the drive so hyperspin loads like it does now? That is what I don't know how to do shell or map the joys and buttons. I just thought that keep the old drive in there and just run the system off a external? I thought that was the easiest way. Right now the version of hyperspin won't even run Atari 7800 that's on it now. Im new at this so please be patient with me...
rust2dust Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Looks like time to start from square one. time to upgrade the ol puter.hate to say it but...if you want to get the most from hyperspin. You need hardware that will handle the workload...nothing crazy...but single core doesnt cut it for this project.....(I tried)
wyldside74 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 I'm confused it's not my main computer just the one in hyperspin bar top. It was built for me by somebody else I'm not sure what the specs are. I was wondering if this would work.... Install windows in a external USB drive. ( I read online that it can be done easily). I can use xp or 7 I have legit copies I bought. Re-create the hyperspin on the external with the new version and launch to run the games I want. I read that I can shell the system so can I just shell the USB drive? I just don't know how to rebuild a system from scratch with all the wiring for the buttons and joys I would like to just use the coputer system that's in there..( not sure if there is a guide for that) Right now there is NES, Snes, 64, Sega Master, Genesis, 32x, MAME, 2 others but I never play them. I want to get it running, Atari, 26,52,78, colecovision, turbo grafix, not sure if there is a Is a I intellivision, I wouldn't mind Saturn since I was addicted to it when it came out lol...
THK Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I guess your best bet in that case is to rip out the hdd, put it in your/a pc along with a new 4tb hdd > copy an image form the old drive over to the new > stick the new drive in your bartop ..........................back with a vengeance........................
rust2dust Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 You still need a backup saved somewhere... We seem to see one or more threads every couple weeks of someone who had a crash and lost everything. Just sayin....
Mr_Numbers Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Take it from me, you will want to have a backup copy hdd. I've lost a HDD on an unrelated project before and to say it's no fun is an understatement. Undertow76 Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I built my HyperSpin on a external 2 Tera, but then got a internal and copied it to that, made a hell of allot a difference on speed. That way I always have a backup, and I get the best speed out of the internal!

With sata 600 or usb 3.0, the hard drive speed should be the limiting factor. ..........................back with a vengeance........................
suspendedhatch Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Just put your roms on an external. HS, HL and artwork don't take that much space on your internal, and will run faster that way.
THK Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I hope the hdd is 7200 and not 5400 rpm, makes a difference. ..........................back with a vengeance........................
wyldside74 Posted February 23, 2015 Author Posted February 23, 2015 Ok, so I just started this project again been sick and didnt really work on it. So far this is my plans. Tell me if this is a good option. Now the Bar top is not my main computer I know it's a bit slower than my laptop or desktop. So I was thinking about some of the posts already. Take the 160GB out of the Bar top, clone it to a 500Gb because it is already running windows and joy to key and it's also shelled to boot directly into hyper. Then take my most current work and just replace what's on the clone except the roms, put the roms on a external 7200rpm USB drive, point all the emulators to the external form roms. Now my questions will this work? Will the Bartop still be shelled, and joy to key be set up? I'm thinking it should since I'm just replacing files and hyper.exe is still the same name and folder. Option two can I use a sata to IDE adapter and just put it all on a external? Clone the one in there and replace it all with my work I'm doing now. I don't know if those adapters are something to consider I saw them on tigerdirect and newegg. Once I look around this summer at electronic shows and computer conventions I will eventually upgrade the MB and guts but for now im looking for a good soulution. My main concern is working Joy To Key on a new fresh build and getting all the buttons and joys to work right I never dabbled in that. Thanks for all your help so far!
