Help with joystick mounting - First build

Hi all

I'm just starting my first bartop arcade cabinet, based on the Degenatrons mod of the Weecade.

Is it possible to bottom mount the joysticks without using a bolt through the CP.

The cabinet is made from 12mm MDF and I would prefer to have a smooth top on the CP.

Thanks

If your CP is at least 1/2" thick, I could see using small screws from underneath, however, I don't know how long that would hold up. Maybe metal brackets with several small screws on each side? Might sacrifice joystick height though...

How do people do it with 12mm thick cabinets then?

I have seen lots of people making this thickness cabinet and only a few apear to have bolts straight through.

Should I change my CP top for a piece of 18mm and go with the threaded hole kit from here.

I believe they countersink the bolts then wood fill and sand. I have a slightly thicker control panel and I have screwed in directly underneath and have had no problems in the year I have had the bartop. I am sure there are bartops in this cabinet forum with a few pics of how this is done or, as you say, go with the 18mm and countersink.

I've seen people go with a through bolt that is counter-sunk then the counter-sink is filled with Bondo. Seems like that would be more secure than some sort of bottom mounted t-nut unless the t-nut is epoxied or something.

Use threaded inserts. They screw into the wood and have an internal thread, so you can put a machine screw or pan head bolt through it. You can get them as short as 10mm in depth.

I use threaded inserts (From Screwfix - UK)

They are 12mm Depth, but the panel is 12mm, so i 'padded' the reverse with a 3mm MDF spacer to ensure i had enough room.

Works a treat!

Chisel out your panel so that the joystick plate sits flush with the top of the panel, countersink the bolt heads into the plate and fasten underneath. Lay your artwork and plexiglass over the panel, no screw heads :)
