Retroarch Playstation black bars

I finally got around to setting up the PS1 through Retroarch, however in some games like Castlevania Synphony of the Night and Crash Bandicoot I get black bars on the top and bottom of screen. Some games are fine however.

I tried playing with the first and last scan line numbers in the core settings but they don't seem to do anything. Does anyone have a fix for this without vertically stretching the image?

Two ways to do this:

1. set the custom viewpoint to the native resolution of the playstation in your cfg file. Then in game in the tab menu and set to core provided and make any adjustments based off of your monitor's resolution.

2. create a custom viewpoint as you would for an overlay and adjust the resolution either restricting the machine's native ratios or setting your own.

I test my games in 1920x1080 widescreen on my windows 8.1 pc then put into my arcade cab that is 640x480 on windows xp. So I've had a ton of practise at this.

Another way of cropping off most of the overscan black bars while maintaining correct aspect ratio is by turning on integer scale, then going to Custom Ratio and pressing up once and left once. Maybe more than once depending on your resolution (I'm testing it at 1080p). This will crop off stuff for games that don't have black bars too though, so for ideal settings you'd need to have a cropped and non-cropped config and load one or the other per game.
