Bezel performance

I have just started work on my arcade machine project again after quite a while away fixing up a DDR machine and Judge Dredd Pinball machine.

After updating everything and fixing all of the problems which came from that I thought I would finally have a go at getting Bezels working through HyperLaunchHQ. I followed GigaPigs guide in this video and everything went smoothly however I have massive performance issues when the bezels are enabled.

At the moment I have only tested with MAME but any game I load runs incredibly slowly and the sound is breaking up because it is running so slow.

My PC isn't super high spec as my aim was to build the cab with parts I had left over, I wasn't expecting the Bezels to be so hardware intensive.

My current setup is:

1920x1080 screen resolution

AMD II X3 435 2.90 Ghz CPU

4 GB DDR 2

Windows 7 32 bit

Geforce 8800 GT 512MB

I am running 32 bit Windows because I originally planned to use a Guncon driver which only worked with 32 bit but as it turns out I'm not using that driver now. So I plan to reinstall Windows at some point and use 64 bit but I am starting to think it might just be better to upgrade the hardware at the same time and get a decent Intel CPU and newer graphics card.

Any thoughts on if my current setup should be able to handle the Bezels? Or is it time to upgrade?

Thank you

I am having the same problem, and now even when i turn bezels off its still doing it!!!!

I totally wrecked my whole setup that was running perfect :(

It doesn't lag in MAME, or if i launch a game through HyperLaunch, but if i load up hyperspin and play a game it lags horribly.

What the hell could i have done? All i did was change the bezel settings in HyperlaunchHQ

That sounds a little different to my issue as I don't have any problems if I disable Bezels it goes back to working perfectly with them disabled.

I have tested with a different system and get exactly the same problem with the Bezels enabled.

I will let you know if I work anything out.

Well after turning off WaitVsync my games ran fine again in hyperspin. I just learned about this mode late last night and i could swear everything ran fine with it on.

I wonder why they would work fine in MAME and Hyperlaunch but not in hyperspin when Vsync is on??

As for your bezel issue. Same happens to me and my computer is better than yours(No offense). I honestly just think its a MAME issue

i have an I5 3.4 ghz and a GT 730 card 1gb.

There is no reason it should lag, but it does. I get like 50% fps.

I have the same issue but not just in Mame - turn bezels on in Hyperlaunch and everything runs half speed, turn them off and everything's fine again, i3 CPU, 8gb ram.

Mine isn't just MAME either. I will try to fit in some proper testing tonight and see if I can make any progress to report back.

OK so I have done a bit of testing and have improved but not resolved the issue by enabling the Windows 7 default Aero theme. I know disabling Aero can cause all sorts of weird problems and I had min said to the Windows Classic theme.

After going back to the default Windows 7 theme which includes Aero performance with Bezels is much better however it still isn't perfect and the sound still breaks up like crazy when the game is loading.

So can you guys let me know what Windows theme you are using and change it to an Aero theme if you have it set to basic. Right click on your desktop > Click Personalize > Select the theme named Windows 7 under Aero Themes.

Testing with 1942 when running with no bezel and the basic theme MAME uses about 8-10% CPU with the bezel enabled this jumped up to 28-30%.

After enabling the Windows 7 Aero theme with the bezel enabled Mame was running at about 10-12% CPU.

Two things I have noticed which someone else might be able to help with are:

1. When I have bezels enabled MAME doesn't seem to apply my HLSL settings which is annoying.

2. This might be related to the performance issues but when I run MAME with bezels disabled if I press ctrl alt del while MAME is running the Windows screen is shown in very low resolution however if I do the same when the bezel is enabled the Windows screen is show in my native desktop resolution of 1920x1080.

I am going to do some testing with other systems with the Windows theme changes and will update you when I know more.

That Windows theme change seems to have done the trick. I have been enabling bezels for all systems and they seem to be working fine when using the Aero theme but the ones I have tested always kill the performance when using Windows basic theme.

I am still getting some strange sounds when first loading games in MAME. And also have some sound corruption, mainly the vertical ones which only appears to happen with the bezels enabled. I will keep working on it but things are much better now.

Now all I need to do is work out why there is a MAME cmd box open in the background which is visible between the bezel and game screen on certain games and stop the taskbar and mouse cursor showing which only seems to have started happening with bezels enabled.

Those issues can be disabled in HLHQ on the module tab
