Commodore 64 help

Hey Guys

I have the Commodore 64 set up and running, but I am not grasping what controls needed to be set up and what I need button wise.  I am confused some games load the blue screen, others load into the game and ask for run keys, 1, 2 etc.....

Do I make a xpadder profile? Looks like I am using winvice but not sure how I configure the xbox360 pad.

You will need to set up a key set in Winvice for direction and fire and map them to xpadder. It's a good Idea to look at the emulator for other keys it uses, like quick load and save, and warp mode to speed up the loading

I also have swap joystick mapped, the Function keys mapped to the D-pad (F1,F3, F5, F7) Caps. Space, Y & N. Some of those are required to get past cracktros.

Some games will need a dedicated xpadder profile.

WOW seems like a problem.

I loaded 007 and hangs on first screen? does that mean I am supposed to hit some other key?

is there a way to hide the blue commodore screen?

That depends on the 007 file, if it's working or it may be a disk image and you don't have True Drive emulation turned on. A tape image will take a while to load but you will see coloured lines around the window. Disk images can look like nothing is happening except for some faint clicks. Best thing to do is press alt-w for warp mode.

Here is my xpadder profile to give you some idea.

;--- Xpadder Profile File ---
DataType=Profile
Version=2015.01.01

[Profile Settings]

[set Settings]

[Assignments]
Set1Button1Slots=Enter
Set1Button2Slots=N
Set1Button3Slots=Space
Set1Button4Slots=Y
Set1Button5Slots=Alt,J
Set1Button6Slots=Alt,W
Set1Button7Slots=Alt,L
Set1Button8Slots=Alt,S
Set1Button9Slots=Caps Lock
Set1Button10Slots=Escape
Set1DPadUpSlots=F1
Set1DPadRightSlots=F5
Set1DPadDownSlots=F7
Set1DPadLeftSlots=F3
Set1Stick1UpSlots=Arrow Up
Set1Stick1RightSlots=Arrow Right
Set1Stick1DownSlots=Arrow Down
Set1Stick1LeftSlots=Arrow Left

There is no way to hide the commodore screen that I know of.

Alt-j swap joystick ports

Alt-w warp mode, speeds up loading.

Space used in game, various functions or to get past cracktros

Caps lock can be used to get past cracktros and I think it's link to the C64 Run\Stop key

Function keys used in game, various uses, difficulty settings. In Raid Over Moscow F7 is used to open the hanger doors for example.

Alt-l & Alt-s, quick load & quick save

I would assume you never had one back in the 80's, it's a system you have for the love of it and nostalgia, if you don't have that then I probably wouldn't bother either.

There is a fantastic set on PD by Turranius which has a set with no cracks, but you would need to follow his readme to get it working.

WinVice is phantastic with a very good compatibility rate.

I just experienced a problem, maybe someone knows an answer:

I play via keyboard  (Arcade-Joysticks mapped to keyboard via USB) and it runs smoothly. Only thing to do is check the option "Activate fire buttons".

My question: is there a shortcut for activating/deactivating this option? There is none listed.

I need it to use the mapped letters for the joystick buttons for Highscore entries etc.

Thanks in advance!

I did have one, didn't use it much but I notice now when u load a game u have to pick several keys ie) yes or no or special key(s) to get int to the game. Annoying. I was hoping it could boot into the game, press start and pow works. I understand its not like that as its a computer. Just trying to see what other systems I will add before connectin to my tv! I use 360 padand want it to be a seamless configuration. Consoles work best just branching out now.... Any recommendations?

As a old C64 users... I seriously find using c64 and Amiga to be problem when dealing with anything other than simple single file games and or one sided games that don't require too much other than fire button start lol. For a better experience I plan on using winvice and winuae outside of HS (as well as using C64 Forever which I like a lot.. gave me the best oldschool c64 feel as far as playing the games... real simple... no fuss)

I plan on adding Amiga and C64 to HS in the future but I will only add the games that I know are simple and won't be a pain in the ass..

Yeah, with Amiga and especially Commodore 64... there are way too many keys that are required for certain games... I barely can deal with the games that either use PORT 1 or PORT 2 lol. some c64 games actually use keys 1 - 0 as well as all the function keys, run stop, commodore key, space bar and a few letter keys LOL.. no way to get around not using an actually keyboard with certain games.
