vaderag
So I've followed the tutorial here to create genre's for my Mame list: http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/tutorials/article/52-written-using-hyperspins-genre-feature/ The problem is, I have a lot of sub genres that have been created (i.e. Driving Boat / Driving Plane), where as really I just want "Driving" Is there an easy way to do this? I presume I can use the List Merger in Don's tools, but I've tried that for one category and it a) takes a while and doesnt seem designed for this task as it adds and <exe> tag to each entry... Thoughts? Thanks
ninja2bceen
Bad xml then. You will have to find and replace the main xml and run dons again

The xml was created using Don's, which pulled in from Hyperlist...
vaderag
So the original root mame database? Where is the best place to source that from ? From memory that was created by Mame itself, then I pointed Don's to that and the hyperlist (I may be remembering some parts wrong...)
ninja2bceen
Use the download page
vaderag
Use the download page So, i'm still a bit confused. Take this: http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/files/file/11008-mame-xml-full-lists/ This is a list of all Mame games... but that isn't what i want. My Mame.xml has a list of Mame games that I have on my system. This is created the following way: 1) Open Don's List Gen 2) Add HyperList downloaded from here for Mame 3) Generate mamelist.xml using in Dons 4) Scan 5) Select where game = YES 6) Export to MAME.xml At which step is this picking up the incorrect (or i should say, more detailed) Genres and which file do I need to work to replace? It seems to all stem essentially from the HyperList, but that is from here so surely should be correct??
Metalzoic
First does your Database version match your MAME version? If you want to use that DB then you could also simply change the genre's. Would only take a couple minutes. After you split it into genre's with Don's, look in the MAME database folder and open the genre.xml. That will show you all the genre's it found in your database. Then open the main database in notepad++, and do a find/replace for each genre you want to change. (find all Driving\Boat... replace with just Driving etc...). Repeat that till they are what you want! Once it's all fixed delete all the garbage XMLs and use Don's to split the fixed database into all the correct ones. Shouldn't take to long at all, I've done it myself a few times. Make sure your media is named accordingly and also make sure your folder structure is correct (media/genre structure completely changed in the latest RocketLauncher update). vaderag
I'm pretty sure that Don's just pulls the genre info from the starting database, so Step 2 is most likely your problem. Easy way to check is to open that database and look for some of those sub genres using the Find function in your text editor. If you find those sub genres, that database is your problem. There are 4 or 5 people here who upload mame databases so there will be differences between them. Yep, looking at it that is where the issue is stemming from (which is odd given it came from here!!) Database etc is all fine... I think i might just do that - find replace in the xml... everything else seems to be working so might be easiest to do it that way
vaderag
It's not odd at all, just because you found it here doesn't mean it's perfect for everyone's preferences. Since there hasn't been an official Mame database for a few versions there are different people who make and upload their own. Some people use different filters and criteria than others. Well, I mean, given it's the one linked from the official HyperList page i'd expect it to be most correct... i get that there is a few floating around. I'm actually thinking i might try a different list now... EDIT: Actually - i've just downloaded 3 and while a couple of their lists are better I don't think they're much better than I'll do by find/replace... In my experience a lot of stuff in the Hyperlist here is older or outdated. I never, ever use it except as a last resort (or I'm drunk).
vaderag
Haha - fair enough! Well, i've done my Find/Replace now and getting somewhere near what I need
vaderag
Thanks for the help guys - got it all set up now Follow up question... Is it possible to make the genre selection behave differently to the standard? For some reason it feels like this wheel should go horizontally... Not that I know of, but maybe it's possible to manually edit the .ini file? No idea really...
vaderag
I've looked through all the ini's with no luck. Even tried adding a few lines in the global settings to see if i could force horizontal wheel unless overridden in one of the others but it didnt work. Just don't think it's possible i'm afraid
