Non working programs after Shelling

Hello guys, I suppose this is kinda off topic, but I am having issues with certain programs not functioning correctly after shelling my OS. In particular my issue is with Vjoy. For those that do not know, Vjoy is a program that basically replaced PPjoy. It is a program that simulates having a joystick plugged in and allows you to map the keys to the keyboard. Anyway, I just found out that if I kill explorer.exe, the Vjoy process stays up if it was already running. But if I close Vjoy and try to reopen it, it just pops up in the process list and disappears quickly. The program works perfectly when explorer is running. The program uses the task bar to show its icon and maybe that is one of the problems since the task bar is part of explorer. It does seem like it used to work for me, but maybe I just never noticed it not working until recently.

If anyone has any other programs that they know of that stops working correctly after shelling please post it here. Or if you have any idea what I could try to get this program working correctly, I would love to know. Thanks!

Here is a command that will kill explorer in case anyone would like to simulate shelling. Just remember to get explorer running again you can type "explorer" (without quotes) into the new task in task manager.

taskkill /f /im explorer.exe

Hey Trnzaddict, do you ever close the process and reopen it, or do you leave it running constantly? Now that you say you have no issues with it, I am more inclined to think that it may be a new issue for me and it used to work on my system. Maybe if it is not too much trouble, you could play around with Vjoy on your system and see if you can replicate my problem. I can replicate the problem on a different computer running the same Windows 7 64 bit.

Thats a bummer about xpadder. I have never used that program so I cannot really be of any assistance there. I am sure you have already considered this, but is there a way to always keep the process running and just load a new profile (even a blank one)? Running shelled is really nice in my opinion and I hope that this does not end up being a big enough problem to keep me from running shelled.

Yea I close it and reopen it. It's always closed unless ahk detects a coin insert then I have it run vjoy to unlock controls for Shiki. When the exit game key is pressed I have it kill vjoy.

When I have time tomorrow ill boot up my cab and see if I can replicate your issue. I have been lucky so far with shelling and processes. Someone also stated that APC loader won't work when shelled, but it works with rotating games fine as well on my cab.

Nevertheless I'll report back.

Thank you I appreciate it!

Son of a bitch... You are right. I must of setup Shikigami when I had explorer still running and wasn't shelled yet. Yea when explorer isn't running vjoy won't run.

I just booted my cab and selected Shikigami PC. I tried inserting a coin and vjoy was not running. Brought up task manager, ran explorer, started Shikigami and inserted a coin again and viola, vjoy ran.

There has to be a way around this. Maybe contact Headkaze and see if maybe we can find a solution. If not well, I'll remove Shikigami from my cab unt Mamedev writes a music driver for the original.

Yeah I already sent him a message, but have not got a response yet. You should send him one too if you want. Maybe I broke Vjoy for everybody ;). I am trying to decide whether I get rid of Vjoy and all the games that depend on it, or not shell Windows....tough choice.

Thanks for testing it out for me tho!

I will. Headkaze is not the best when it comes to fixing problems though....I sent him a couple of emails a while ago about fixing the problem with cpwizard not working right when multithreading is turned on in MAME and he never got back to me either.

EDIT: I just fired an email over to him. I don't know about your setup but the only game using vjoy out of all my games on my cab is Shikigami, so until this can be fixed it's out of my setup. What can ya do.

I have a few that depend on it. One I can think of off the top of my head is the Deathspank series. That game plays really well in "controller" mode mapped back to the keyboard. If all these games supported the xinput1_3.dll hack, I wouldn't even need Vjoy any more. Deathspank says it supports Xinput, but I have never been able to get it working for that series.

I kinda put this on the back burner, but I was playing around with it again tonight. I found a backup from about a year ago that i was able to test with. It failed the same way back then as well, apparently I didn't notice it for that long! Anyway, I thought I would just give an update. I don't think we are going to hear back from the author of this program....what a shame :(
