Downer28 Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Has anyone managed to download all the covers from http://www.thecoverproject.net? I found matchaman/mastershoes on the FTP with a few systems (Sega Genesis, N64), but was hoping that someone got around to covering some others. Otherwise it's going to be a painfully slow process downloading them all.
MLSchleps Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I downloaded the Atari 5200 and 7800 covers. I made a 2D set of 5200 official releases for Hyperspin, but this was before I became a Gold member and was unaware of the proper size. The size of the mint set here is 360x500. Mine are 328x454. I'll redo them this week so they are the proper size. I uploaded the smaller set to my folder on the FTP. Grab it and let me know what you think!
DamnedRegistrations Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 We're pretty much against using coverproject since they use custom and inaccurate artwork. It's strongly recommended to use real scans, covers and spines to make sets nowadays especially if you're going to upload them for others. Most of the old box sets by koolbreaze and others were made using those fake covers/spines which need to go, so they're slowly being replaced by proper sets as the Hyperspin Project comes along.
MLSchleps Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Yeah, I compared the Atari 5200 cover project boxes to the original box scans when I put my set together and I had to make a few modifications to them to make them look like the originals. Most of the 5200 cover project scans are accurate and look good. I gotta say, though, the ones in the mint set here on the ftp site for the Atari 5200 aren't the exact original box art. I'm in the process right now of redoing my 5200 boxes to match the same size as the mint set. What I'll probably do is for each box, put a picture together that has 1) the original box scan, 2) my edited version and 3) the mint set box so they can easily be compared. That way in the end, I will have a proper set to upload here. The projects I'm working on right now are the Atari 5200 (because the wheel was already done) and the Bally Astrocade.
MLSchleps Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Here's what I'm talking about: The first picture is an original box scan The second picture is my edited version of the cover project's box The third picture is the FTP Mint version Let's look at Centipede: The Mint set version has a blown up picture and is modeled after the later 5200 boxes. The same goes for Missile Command, Space Invaders, Star Raiders, etc... Next is Frogger: The Mint set version has smaller text for the "A Video Game Cartridge from Parker Brothers" and the "For the Atari 5200 Game System" is shifted up and the 'TM' is too big... Next is Star Trek: The Mint set version has the wrong font for the "For the Atari 5200 Game System" at the top of the box and the ® for Atari is lower than it should be and the 'TM' is too big. Also the Sega letters at the bottom are too dark of a blue. It's going to take some time to get these just right, but in the end it will be worth it.
brolly Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 We already have all the fronts done for 5200 and 7800 in the HS Project, we do need someone to tackle the spines for the 3D set though. Maybe you want to help with those?
MLSchleps Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I would love to help with this. Sign me up! Can you send me the details on how to join the project? Thanks!
MLSchleps Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Here's my first attempt at a 3D box - I did Missile Command. What do you think?
brolly Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Needs some effects in the edge between the spine and front otherwise it won't look 3D, other than that seems good. I wouldn't bother with creating any 3D boxes though we already have a template and can batch create them in a few seconds if you use the project 2D templates. Any other 3D model can be generated from these 2D templates if needed as well.
