In an effort to provide clearer ongoing art direction, this thread will serve as a quick reference for theme creation best practices. We are presently working on native support for additional aspect ratios and, as such, recommend if people do make 16:9 themes right now they keep a backup of their source material. If you still want to use the current workaround to make a 16:9 theme right now, the below information can help: Please note, the way we do things is going to change as far as themes goes but making 16:9 versions is so quick and painless I figured now is as good a time as any to start. We have plans in place to preserve and grandfather existing themes …

These JSFL scripts will automatically convert PNGs into SWFs using flash professional. Why using SWFs instead of PNGs into an hyperspin theme? Flash supports a "smooth" feature, when "smooth" flag is used a SWF will look much better than a PNG when hyperspin runs at a resolution higher than 1024*768. If you plan to use 1024*768 on hyperspin, instead, it is better to NOT use "smooth" as the artwork will be blurred a bit. This is mostly a workaround for those who wants to design future-proof themes at 1080p. Create your artworks layer in photoshop (or gimp or whatever) at 1080p, save background and artworks as .png in a folder. Double click the script and point to…

The audit's going well and I've found a lot of fantastic content I didn't know existed It's always been clear that all of our artists and contributors are extremely talented. One flaw in our process has caught my attention a few times, however. In some instances where source material was difficult to find or doesn't exist at all in the real world, some creators have occasionally filled the gaps by fabricating something original to put in its place. While I would argue that this practice is a bit of a wasted effort relative to us working as a team to find the source material needed to make accurate art, it is technically acceptable as long as it's clear what's been f…

As part of ongoing efforts to get HyperBase hyperorganized as @fr0stbyt3 develops HyperBase Live, I'm going to use this thread to stay organized during the most rigorous artwork audit HyperSpin has ever seen. This will include all artwork available on the FTP and in the DL section and will be cross-referenced against my personal collection. For any artists interested, I will leave notes as to which parts of which systems/sets need love. If any sets are missing important elements (eg. missing wheels from a "complete" set) that set will be excluded from upload until such a time as the discrepancy is corrected (Eg. AAE's Widow 2 wheel set is missing several wheels). …

In an effort to provide clearer ongoing art direction, this thread will serve as a quick reference for wheel creation best practices. Media Type(s): Main Menu System Wheels, System Sub-Wheels, Game Wheels, Genre Wheels, the Wheels on the Bus. Minimum Width: >1080p: 400px 4K: 800px 8K: 1600px Note: There is no height limit, just use common sense. 175px/350px/700px is a good general guideline for 1080p/4K/8K but this can be deviated from if a given logo has abnormal dimensions and you feel the aethetic would be improved by a non-standard wheel dimension. Note: Ideally you'll wanna draw/redraw and touch these up at hella high resolut…

For people trying to get better at Photoshop I really recommend the Lynda .com one-on-one CS6 training/tutorial dvd's (Get it at [PB mirror]/search/lynda%20com%20one%20on%20one%20cs6/0/99/0) Especially the chapter on the Pen-Tool is essential. Other than that, practice is the best way to get better, don't know how to do something, look up those tutorial vids, google or ask one of our theme/wheel creators here on the forum. Some important tools to know/learn Image > Adjustments > Levels: Often the better way to adjust brightness & contrast Image > Adjustments > Vibrance: Adjust vibrance & saturation Image > Adjustments > Color Balance: Add or…

Here you will find a collection of video tutorials that I created specifically for people that would like to know the basics of Photoshop. I have tried to break down each tool into its own tutorial so each one does not run too long. Sometime soon I will be recording a 3 part video tutorial on creating a theme. That will most likely have its own thread and I will keep this one just for Photshop tutorials. I hope these tutorials help people out. If you have any suggestions for a tutorial, or would like to create a tutorial to help out the community, please PM me. And if you would like to check out the entire collection of video tutorials, please visit our Vimeo page by cli…

Source Material Acquisition Program Note: I cannot emphasize enough that this is something we really do want to do to help you out as a Content Creator. Please do not be shy about making requests. We all know you can work magic but we don't want you to have to and we'll do everything we can to reduce your workload, give you back time to enjoy the finer elements of your work, and to just enjoy more creative freedom in general No one will be frowned upon in the least for making source requests. To all Content Creators: If you're working on a system and you're struggling to find source material please let me know and we can keep track in this thread. While we can …

There's a ton of work going on behind the scenes right now on metadata. The way we do a lot of things will be changing. In the meantime, I have attached below all of the current best databases we're working off of. These are a good reference for Content Creators working on a system to help guide artwork. As always, if you see issues let us know. Supra's Ultimate sets are likely going to be the most accurate in cases where I've included two sets for the same system: Current_Databases.zip Update 1 - Newer Atari 5200 xml: Atari 5200.zip Update 2 - Newer Atari 2600 xml: Atari 2600.zip Update 3 - Newer Atari 7800 xml: …

I'm about half done sorting the Upload Here section and one thing that caught my eye is the number of very large, high quality sets available in the upload section. While we definitely want to give artists the freedom to distribute their creations however they wish, please consider using the Platinum Download section if you're uploading anything especially large as that sort of thing can contribute to significant server load and we like to keep the lights on If you're dead set against it, let me know and we can talk about it and I hope people understand I'm coming from a positive place with this request. If you have especially massive files in the Upload Here or standard…

Being a Content Creator is a big deal! It means you're a consistently active, participating member of the community helping us to push the digital museum aspect of HyperSpin ever-onward to perfection. What some people may not know is that being upgraded to Content Creator also comes with a membership upgrade, which means right now you get full Platinum Membership and everything that goes along with it. For the hardiest of contributors, the art community might also grant you vault access to help with projects. As I am now auditing the Upload Here section, I'm dishing out a lot of upgrades to people who have contributed a ton of stuff over the years. In some cases, I …

In an effort to provide clearer ongoing art direction, this thread will serve as a quick reference for best practices when it comes to the creation of disk/disc/cart artwork. Media Type(s): Disc/Disk/Cart Artwork (2D/3D) Minimum Width: >1080p: Depends on the system but ~400px for CD/DVD discs is a good starting point, with other cart types scaled relative to their irl size compared to a real CD/DVD. Ie. if the cart in real life is half as wide as as a CD/DVD, you'd want your art to be at least ~200px wide for 1080p. Recommend higher resolution for CD/DVD discs due to the amount of small font and fine detail prevalent on all of them. 4K: ~800px fo…

I'm in awe at the sheer amount of hard work and talent that gets pumped into the community every day. This thread will serve as a sort of townhall for the artistic community where I'll strive to provide as much creative direction as possible with what information we're allowed to share at any given time. Questions are welcome but please note that information being provided here is effectively pretty much everything I can be divulge on a given day. I'll do my best to always give clear direction to empower creative efforts to align with future capabilities with laser precision. In general, all of the creative assets that have ever been created will persist, especially …

My overly complicated RetroArch(MAME) Plug N Play Project Three months ago I decided to test every standalone Plug and Play, Handheld, and Bootleg Multicart playable in RetroArch(Mame). Specifically, I was targeting System-on-a-chip or NES-on-a-chip (NOAC) devices like VTxx or Xavix. Basically something similar to Project PLUG 'N Play but with a focus on the devices and not individual games and developers. The biggest issue was how similar all these devices were. The same JungleTac/Waixing/Nice Code games show up on different pug n play or handheld devices with different manufacturers. In short its a mess of repackaged games in multiple form factors. That all so…

After beating my head against a wall about this for most of today, curiosity has given way to frustration... How on Earth do the bcolor values in Theme.xml work? They're used for the video frame. I would've thought they'd be 6-digit hex color codes (like FFFFFF for pure white), but they're clearly not. Here's an example from the blkheart theme: bcolor="1906691" bcolor2="6841625" bcolor3="0" I feel like I must be overlooking something really obvious. I did see that BBB talked about a HyperTheme manual when he first introduced the app, but if a manual exists, I can't find it at all. I'm completely stumped. Can some ki…
