The HyperSpin 2 early access beta is here!

We’re starting the first public testing phase with Platinum Members to keep the scope manageable while we test the current feature set and begin to add more. In the future, we’ll provide a version for basic members as well.  On behalf of the entire HyperSpin team, we look forward to another exciting adventure with our community.

Hyperspin all setup, Hypersync updated - now need help understanding how to "clean up" MAME wheel...

Hi Everyone,

Very excited to say that Hyperspin is now fully working and I have synced all artwork, moves and themes with Hypersync, so cool to see it in action!!!

Ok, so now I have more specific questions regarding "cleaning up" the wheel, which currently is only a MAME wheel with the 0.175 romset.

Before I ask these questions, please note that I used Don's Hyperspin tools list generator to filter my list of games to only games that I had. I did no other filtering.

As I was looking through the wheel, I noticed a couple of things:

1. It doesn't look like all games/roms have title logos for their names and some (very few) seem to also be missing movies. Is this simply because these are redundant clones and so emumoves/hyperspin does not have art/movies for these? And to remove them, I can generate a new list from Don's hyperspin tool list generator that excludes clones....which brings me to my next question...

2. It appears that some of the themes appear against specific roms - are these the "parent" roms? And if so, I have a more specific question...my project is a 2-player MAME cabinet. For games like teenage mutant ninja turtles and the simpsons, I'll need to use the 2 player rom version that allows you to pick your character. Otherwise, if I use the parent rom, I would not be able to pick characters because it's pre-set and my cabinet is 2 player...

Therefore, that brings me to my next question, ninja turtles and simpsons are just an example, I have no idea if this would be a problem for other games too!

What I'm trying to achieve in the end is a wheel optimized for a 2 player cabinet, where I'm pretty sure I have to use the rom revisions where it's meant for 2 players..but I also want these awesome game themes to appear on THAT revision.

So is there a pre-configured xml wheel set for 2 players out there? Or how would I manually add these themes to show on other rom revisions?

***Also, let me sneak in one more question here - where in HyperSync (or elsewhere?) do I go to get the cool subgrouping wheels in the MAME list (konami games, CPS1, CPS2, CPS3, Midway, etc. etc.). And, do these become additional wheels along with the mame/arcade classics wheel? Or are they subgrouped wheels UNDER the main mame/arcade classics wheel?

Anything else helpful to know at this point since I'm starting to ask these types of questions? Thanks guys for any help!

Your 2-player clone/version question is answered in my topic here. This topic also has my MAME 175 database and tips on filtering things. Give me a bit to look over your other questions and I'll answer them in a minute too.

In your HyperSpin setting are the options for Clone version to use the Parent themes/vids/wheels etc... sounds like you have that turned off. In situations where that doesn't work, simply go into your media folders and copy paste the Parent srt then rename it to match the clone rom-name

Your second question is all answered in the topic I posted for you

...actually the rest of your questions are already answered too. Themes, wheels, vids etc... can all simply be copied, pasted and renamed to make them work with clones etc...

Metalzoic thank you for the reply!

I snuck in an extra question too at the last minute, do you have any insight to the below? I'm going to check out your other thread now:

You make them yourself.

So for example you:

-Make a new system for each in HyperHQ and RocketLauncher such as Williams Classics, Namco Classics etc... (don't do CPS1, CPS2, CPS 3 etc... that's silly. Just make a single Capcom Classics wheel. Same with Namco)

-Start with a cleaned MAME database that is already exactly how you want it (for me that means getting rid of mahjong, casino, elctromechanical then uncloning all good clones etc... see my other thread for more details). Any mistakes in your source MAME xml will transfer to your manufacturer xml's and either take more work to fix or make you start over.

-Use Dons tools to create the database for each individual manufacturer wheel, simply by filtering by manufacturer (but don't forget that Midway bought bally so both would actually go under a Midway Classics wheel). Also split out their genres in Dons tools.

-For art the easiest way to do it is to symbolically link the media folders of each manufacturer system to your already existing MAME media folders. This way you don't need to copy-paste and duplicate tons of artwork and waste a bunch of HDD space. Also do this for your RocketLauncher bezels.

A link to help with symbolic links can be found on page 17 of my Mega Bezel Pack Thread here:

The manufacturer wheels are each their own wheel, not grouped underneath another. Here's a video of Hyperspin running on my arcade cab to give you an idea. There's also vids of the cab itself on my channel. My 175 databases might actually be posted in my topic I posted earlier for you.

Hi Metazoic thank you for all the information!

For these james baker themes, where do you go to get them? Do you have to pay for another subscription to launchbox premium? Or are they available here on Hyperspin (can't find them...)

***Wait nevermind I did find them, thanks again***:

Nice. I didn't realize they were even still available here. I thought he removed them all.

Some of mine might be his older versions that aren't available anymore and all of mine are further edited, customized, re-timed,  altered or had music changed by me, but the base ones look like they are there.

Hi again -

If I wanted to "hide" the other system emulators for now from coming up on the main wheel and have it go directly into the mame theme...how would you go about it? I was hoping to find the least "destructive" route in case I wanted to ever bring the other systems back..

***Edit - to elaborate...I think I'd like to first wheel that you come to be the subgroupings of arcade manufacturing themes. (hyperspin logo -> main wheel that is made up of arcade manufacturer groupings, and the default landing one would be the arcade classics james baker theme.)

So I suppose I would hide all of the other emulator systems I guess under C:\HyperSpin\Databases\Main Menu and I would modify the xml to only show the wheels I would create via don's hyperpin list generator and give themes to?

Is there any concern over when I ever go back to hypersync, having the configuration overridden?

You can't hide wheels or do wheels within wheels (without using other means). To hide systems you'd probably have to remove them from the systems list in HyperHq and RL... basically deleting them (you can do that without deleting their content/media etc...). I'd guess the best way would be to make multiple HyperSpin setups. Launch one when you want one wheel, launch the other for a different wheel. Not sure if you'd also need two separate RocketLauncher installs too...

I can't see a reason to do this so I'm not the best person to ask. There are topics on here about how to nest wheels within wheels though.

oh sorry - I didn't mean to nest wheels within each other. I meant to say, the very first wheel you come to after the hyperspin logo finishes would be made up of various arcade game manufacturers, similar to what you have in your video above. One of the "systems" on this wheel would be the full list of cleaned arcade roms and the other "systems" would be these manufacturer sub groupings.

**also, I was hoping to find that midway classics theme in your video that had the mortal kombat song intro, wasn't able to find it on hyperspin or anywhere else...

Another question -

So I am going through my rom list using Don's hyperspin list to remove clones, mahjong/casino games, etc.. After I do this, and make this my new mamelist.xml, I don't need to re-sync with hypersync correct? Since I already downloaded everything the first time, the smaller/reduced list will still use the same videos/artwork/themes already in the media folder - is this correct? Thanks!!

If you're interested... check my signature for a link to a custom MAME XML that would fit your needs. I'm working on a 2-player cabinet as well, and make heavy use of clones.

Correct, you won't need to re-sync.

For Bezel art work, do these only apply if you're using an LCD screen?

I'm going to attempt to use an original arcade CRT with the calamity crt drivers...would I still have an opportunity to use the bezel artwork?

If you're using a CRT, there's no space/need for a bezel. I wouldn't think you would want to use them in that case anyway.

Yes. no need to re-sync as you already have it all. Also I'd say don't ever use Hypersync more than once per system, because if you add a bunch of themes manually that you like, or customize any, or rename any etc... re-syncing will overwrite them and you'll have to do it again. Learned that the hard way. So my rule is sync one then forget Hypersync even exists.

And yes, many bezels are for 16:9 screens. There are MAME ones for 4:3 screens, but I can't see why anyone would want to use them as they just make the actual game area on screen smaller than it needs to be.

Personally I never remove clones. If you read my other thread you'll see that I remove all the crap I don't want, but leave all clones. Then I unclone all the good clones and set HyperHQ to not show any clones. This way if I run across a clone that I want, or a good one that should be uncloned it's in my XML already. If you remove them you don't have that option without hunting down the database info and re-adding it to your xml, and then doing it again for any manufacturer wheel that needs it to. So my rule is never remove clones, just hide them until you want to unclone them.

Hi Metalzoic -

I think you're right for most of these cinematic themes...they don't seem to exist anymore as far as in the form of your video up here. Are the ones in your video ones that you've customized (added the music for example?). I would ask you how to add the custom music but if the themes themselves are no longer available it wouldn't do much good. Was James Baker the only one that made and offered the themes? Are they available elsewhere? I see that he's moved his content to launchbox but since I've already paid for subscriptions here and emumoves I think I could live without them. Yours is awesome though, loved the midway one.

@Metalzoic

I'm back on this project after a little hiatus due to so much work...I was wondering if you could elaborate on the "uncloning" process?

I'm going to try to follow your advice on this post where you don't remove clones, you just hide them with HyperHQ. Since my cabinet will just be two players, I want to "hide" the game versions that are 4 player, but "unclone" the versions that are 2 player. Do you mind elaborating on the process for which you unclone a 2 player version AND how you go about making the 4 player version invisible, even if it's a parent? Thanks for any clarity!!!!

Actually I just found your instructions on your clone thread, I just need a clarification:

You write:

That's what the list is for. You do it the normal way. Go through the list and manually un-clone them directly in your database.

Just change "<cloneof>GAME</cloneof>" line to "<cloneof />", just like it looks in the database above.

So, for 4 player versions, do I put <cloneof>Parent Game</cloneof> so that HyperHQ hides them instead? If the 4 player version of the game IS the parent, what would I reference inside the "<>"?
