Hello,

I figured out how to setup genre however I need a little help.  I noticed different systems have different Genres.  Is there a link to download all the generic Genre wheels/themes for the genre's? I have been using my mame one, however noticed other systems have different sections.

Also when grabbing the XML is there a way to get a system and all genre's in one file? I checked hyperlist click GENRE but I have to download each genre seperate which is a major pain as I want to have genre for all systems...

thanks

Hey

I found the ultimate ones they are awesome but I did not see all systems there are 10.. I was after PSX/PS2 etc.. OR can I use one of the genre ones you made and just be sure I rename the categories accordingly?

Hey

OK so I found your amazing artowork it features so many categories.. exactly what I am after..  However when I sort a xml on Don's and split via Genre's the naming scheme is always different than the artwork? Don's lists Sports-Hockey.xml, Sports-Baseball.xml etc..... and the artwork in the downloaded pack, does not exactly match.. for example it is listed as Hockey.png, Baseball.png...

Is there a xml generator that lists them the same as each other? **I checked and it seems its mainly SPorts games that are different. not as bad as i thought to change ...  Removed poor choice of words ) appears I am a tool and not understanding this !

It's that way because for MAME the sports are denoted as Sports/<subcategory> but because windows cannot handle / in filenames they end up like that. It's not a big deal renaming a few sports wheels. If you did it once you just copy them over to wherever you need them afterwards.

lol I know you're new, but please don't ever use the expression 'Pain In The Ass' with me, when trying to configure your system. With all due respect, you don't know what 'pain in the ass' means. This hobby is very time intensive - not just for you, the end user, but especially for the .3% of people who actually contribute.

Be an actual contributer, and not just an end user, then you can complain about how much work it is. I seriously don't know whether to chuckle or be annoyed with you - if you think this stuff - the basics - is a pain in the ass, maybe you should find another hobby.

Look, all you need to do is make copies of all the sports artwork files, and rename the copies after whatever the alternate naming scheme is. If the original artwork file is 'Hockey' and Split Hyperlist tool gives you Sports-Hockey or Hockey-Sports, copy the file twice, and rename it Sports-Hockey.png and Hockey-Sports.png. You don't need to edit any XML files, ever.

You only need to do that once. It shouldn't take you more than 15 minutes - and once you do it, you can put it a folder called 'genre media,' then Sym link it to the respective folders to save hard drive space.

Hey

your right pita is not nice and I apologize.. I do really appreciate all the work people put into this. I once trie a theme and it took me hours to make it half decent (even then it looked like ass compared to what is out there) I think my words were a poor choice) I really appreciate your work and everyone spears truly do!  I did not know u could link to media? How is that done? I didn't know u could do that! Dummy me renaming them over and over I thought there was a simplified way )

Thanks again and please forgive my rudeness!

Don't sweat it.

There should be a 'sym link' tool buried in the downloads section somewhere. Basically you can keep all of your genre wheels in a folder called, for example, Media\genre media\wheels, and all of your genre backgrounds in a folder called Media\genre media\backgrounds. If you wanted to link all of the wheels from Media\genre media\wheels to, say for example, Media\Nintendo Entertainment System\Images\Genre\Wheel, you would open both folders in separate windows, select from the Media\genre media\wheels folder (control+A), then right click, drag and drop to Media\Nintendo Entertainment System\Images\Genre\Wheel, and when the right click menu comes up, choose 'create symbolic link here.'

This allows you to store the files one time someplace, and your PC will treat them all as copies.

A couple of caveats:

1. You cannot freely move the symlink files around. If you need new symlinks, repeate the process, don't move old ones.

2. You can symlink folders, but if you do so, and then open the symlinked folder and delete files, you will be deleting the files from the source folder. It's safer to symlink the files themselves so you don't accidentally break stuff.

3. You must have an NTSC formatted hard drive.

Eh, I kinda had it coming. I act douchey and self important at times - and I respect agent47, so I don't have any problem getting taken down a notch. :)

Glad you figured it out, I'll see if I can find that symlink program for you.

You have to install the

 vcredist_x64.exe for VS2005 SP1, version 6195/June 2011 (3.0 Mb)

or

 vcredist_x86.exe for VS2005 SP1, version 6195/June 2011 (2.6 Mb)

first, depending on what kind of system you have, then install the

Link Shell Extension (3.83Mb)

It works just like I described - you right click on a file or files, drag it to another folder, and drop, the choose 'create Symbolic link here'.

The filename will appear the same, but if you're in 'details' view in windows, the column for file type will specify that it is a symlink, and you can see that the file size is 0 bytes.

Read up on the site for details.

Also, one last note - be careful of replacing an existing sym link with an actual .png file... I think I may have overwritten the actual file the original symlink links to once or twice. Delete the original symlink first before bringing in another file of the same name.
