[SOLVED] Certain ROMs not appearing in Hyperspin menu

Hi all, first time poster so apologies if this is in the incorrect section.

I'm having trouble with a few ROMs, specifically Sonic ones (Sonic 1, 2 and 3).   They simply do not appear in the Mega Drive games list along with my other games.

They are .bin files, as are the rest of the Mega Drive roms.  Their names are correct and I can launch them from within RocketLauncher.  They just fail to appear in Hyperspin.  Very odd.

Anyone come across this before?

Thanks for any help in advance.

What is displayed on the wheel is controlled by HQ. Do you have any filters set (parent, rom, wheel, theme)?

As a last resort, you may wish to put "bin" and "BIN" in the extensions box or go to your files and make sure they are all one way or the other. Cant remember if capitalization matters here to be honest.

Thanks for the reply.  The only filter I have set is ROM only and this works to a degree in that I can see the games i have (about 8) just not the Sonic games.  If I turn the filter off so that all the database game are displayed I can select Sonic and it works!

I will try adding BIN to the extension list. Thanks for the suggestion.

theres a good chance youve solved your problem or you probably would have replied by now. though i will share...

i had a similar problem where non of the fixes online worked.

firstly if youve gone through all the normal suggestions and nothing worked.

-download 'Dons hyperspin tools' in the download section.

-open the exe that says 'create new hyperlist'

-create a new xml file using the roms in your folder.

-after that, add it to the hyperspin database (hyperspin/database/sega mega drive)

-replace the existing file.

there was something wrong with my list where games just wouldnt show. even if i selected ROMs only, wheels only. it didnt matter.

use this as a last resort, most of the time its something very simple though

There is an extra step to this (refer here) to fill your newly created xml with the details of each rom - genre, developer, year etc. - It's not strictly necessary but if you want to create genres and have the game info display it is.

Also keep in mind that renaming to suit your existing roms rather than renaming the roms to match the standard will result in huge headaches trying to match images, wheels and video, especially if you intend to do that via the syncing programs.

sorry forgot about that. good to mention.

when i had the error it was for my PC games which have all been custom made and not bulk downloaded from online, so i didnt have to worry about all the names matching.

Thank you both for the replies.

I have spent some time installing MAME and configuring controls etc.  I still have the problem with certain ROMs not appearing (for some Mega Drive games)  Is there a tool available to rename the ROMs rather than renaming the database?  I do intend eventually to purchase the videos and other extra content and can completely see how this would create a problem further down the line.

The thing is I know that everything else works so it can't be an issue with incorrect extensions or file paths etc.

Cheers

I have just been browsing the downloads section.  Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I'll update the thread for those interested.

What i find odd is that if I untick (ROMs only) I get the full list of games and I can select and play the ones that previously do not appear.  Most strange.  I will keep trying.

Hmm maybe it has something to do with your extensions, or extension settings somewhere in RL or something. Not sure someone else might be familiar with this issue otherwise Google is your friend!

I will double-check everything again tonight.  They are all the same extension (.bin) so not sure why the software is excluding some and not all of them.

Thanks again for the help.

Ahh so they are disc based.

More than likely though I could be wrong but it will be looking for a .cue file.

Usually disc based games come with a .Cue and a .Bin file (or multiple bin files)

As I understand, the Bin files hold the info and the Cue file tells the emulator the order of event's that the Bin files load. I'm sure there is a better technical explanation you can find.

While I think there is generally no problem loading the Bin file if there is only one, best practice is to load the Cue file.

My guess is that by default RL tells it not to show the bin files as you would end up with multiple wheels for the one game.

Anyway this is all best explained with this video.

I don't remember all the details of when I did this myself, but I did find it helpful to use a program called 'files to folders' to sort everything out, so check that out as you need.

I think i used don's hyperspin tools 'rename roms' exe. Be sure to select 'cd image' in the 'system' dropdown if you use it.

Me again,

I have managed to resolve the issue and indeed it was a very simple fix.  I took another look at the files again and even though to my eye they looked correct (and they were being picked up in RL) they were still wrong.

I opened up the Sega Genesis database.xml and found one of the games missing from the wheel.  I copied the name as it appeared in the xml data and pasted it into my the filename.  I don't know what changed but as I did it I saw the filename shorten a fraction.  There must have been an extra character, a space perhaps in the filename.

Launched Hyperspin and viola.  All present and accounted for.

Double and triple check your filenames and if necessary pull them from the xml data.  That way you can be assured they're correct.

Cheers
