The HyperSpin 2 early access beta is here!

We’re starting the first public testing phase with Platinum Members to keep the scope manageable while we test the current feature set and begin to add more. In the future, we’ll provide a version for basic members as well.  On behalf of the entire HyperSpin team, we look forward to another exciting adventure with our community.

I think the wheel art broke Hyperspin

Hi all,

Win 10 - 32 bit, i5 processor, old-ish graphics card.

I've been using Hyperspin with only MAME for several months. I've needed occasional tweaks here and there, but never had a crash issue until now. (I routinely run Tekken 3 and MK3 without issue, fwiw)

Today I finally decided to download the wheel art for MAME. At first, it seemed to work fine. Then I changed the Wheel Image Sizes in HyperHQ to make the selected ROM appear relatively larger on the wheel.  This is where things got weird:

The wheel art for each ROM would disappear when it was at the pointer, and reappear once you moved on to another game. Annoying. I changed the size back to "1" and things went back to normal...at first.  However, after a few seconds of spinning, my entire wheel would eventually disappear. I would end Hyperspin and restart my computer when this would happen. Then I would try again, and as I would spin, the wheel would disappear again and eventually crash leaving me with the grey exclamation mark in the grey circle.

I figured it was an issue with the wheel art, so I moved all the wheel art into a subfolder so that it just loads up the text of the ROM name like it used to.

Now, and after restarting several times since then, as soon as I move the wheel up or down off the initially selected ROM, Hyperspin crashes.  BUT!  It only crashes if I move up or down one.  If I skip or skip num, it goes to that ROM, though I have noticed that it loads the surrounding art a little slowly.

Here's what I've tried:

Moving the wheel art, deselecting all the options in Hyperspin Optimizer, whitelisting the Hyperspin folder in Windows Defender, removing triggers for Windows Defender to run.

Task Manager says I'm only using about 35% memory, so even though it behaves like a ram issue, there's no evidence of it.

I've opened up the Hyperspin log file, but it only shows me activating LED Blinky for the ROMS that I've skipped to. I don't receive any error lines that show why/when I've crashed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I've changed that back and forth.  It doesn't stop Hyperspin from crashing.

Update: for anyone else who may experience this problem.

I noticed the Large and Small wheel art sizes had somehow changed. They were 1 and 1, but seemed to change to 1 and 230, respectively, when I changed the wheel from the normal half circle to a vertical list.  I changed the "large" size to 230 to match the "small" size and it seems to have worked...at least temporarily.

It still doesn't explain why it would crash when I removed all the wheel art though.

So, can any experienced user/moderator attest to this? Does using a small value for the active wheel art create a problem with Hyperspin? Does it try to generate and store in ram the new images for each size as it shrinks, perhaps?
