dcraun Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 With the PD event coming up next week I'm in the market for a HDD newegg has the 3tb WD green drives on sale. I know their a slower drive and go to sleep frequently. Does anyone have any experience using them in a Hyperspin setup? All of my media is stored on a SSD. I wonder if I would be better off to get a 4 Tb WD elements external drive for about the same price and decase it.
Styphelus Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I actually just asked that question a few days ago. For storage the Green is perfect. I have 2 and they are great. That is if you need storage only. For a hyperspin setup, I was told to get the WD RED instead. It's a little more expensive (cost me an extra $30 over the green) but it's supposed to be more durable since it's made to be on 24/7 and be used in a NAS setup. They work perfectly fine as a regular hard drive and they don't go to sleep all the time like the green does. You could go with a WD Black and there's really no point. It costs almost double the money and you don't need that sort of speed for a hyperspin setup. I've been running a 4TB WD RED for 5 days now and it's been good.
HazzardActual Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 got a 3tb red and ive had it for like a year now. its getting a little slower on the spool up time, but that whore is loaded down
dcraun Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 Thanks guys I just pulled the trigger on a 3tb red drive. That takes my cabinet PC up to 9.5TB. I never could have dreamed it was possible a few years ago
