Hello

I'm looking to create a storage and backup system for my entertainment system, I need around 16TB hold all my data.

I have done some research on Freenass, Unraid and Windows Server and building a system with software raid will cost around $900 and hardware raid $1500, then i found this unit: QNAP TS-851-US 8-Bay which will run for $1300. That is not including Hard drives which i will need at least 8 X 4TB WD Red be $1500 dollars CDN.

if i would go with any of the above systems i will not have any backup system just in case if some how hard drives, hardware or some other reason it fails. I will need to spend more money to clone the system.

When i went to go look / buy the QNAP TS-851 and hard drives, the sales person told me i was out of my mind spending all that money on the hardware"QNAP" and "WD".

He told me to buy Orico 9548RU3 USB 3.0 RAID Four Bay Hard Drive Enclosure which has iESupport RAID 0 / 1 / 3 / 5 / 10 / combine / clear RAID funtion and Direct Replacement Warranty which would cost me $170 dollars.

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=14_679&item_id=072432

Also he told me to buy three units with 4TB HD:

One unit attached to my computer with a combine setup in total 16TB.

The 2nd unit as a raid 5 with 12TB to backup all my data on the 1st unit.

The 3rd unit with clear setup with 16TB and off site a backup unit 1 and 2.

This will cost me $510 for the raid systems and $1800 on 12 X 4TB Seagate (ST4000DM000) in total $2300

The Question i have is this sale person on crack or has a great idea? has anyone every used Orico brand before? Or does anybody have any better ideas.

Thanks

My 2 cents:

That USB solution is lame.

1. I use synology every day and QNap is quite similar and would recommend either.

2. When it comes to drives I would look at possibly doing a 50/50 split of Seagates and WDs.( I have seen a lot of seagates fail)

3. Those ST4000DM000 are desktop drives not NAS drives and depending on the load you put on them you may experience more failures. st4000vn000 is the NAS equivalent and $30 more per drive.

4. Based on whatever unit you get you may be able to use one of those Orico things to backup your QNAP via USB.

I just think if you want something more robust that you can do more with the QNAP or a Syno is the way to go vs some no name USB storage device. Good luck.

I second the synology......great piece of hardware with good OS....and paired with NAS drives, one can not go wrong

I personally have the ds414+ which is a 4 bay. I have all 3tb nas drives and 2 5tb usb backups. I dump syno to usb and rotate them around offsite.

If you are looking for redundancy you will need at least 5 4tb drives 4 a raid 5 or synology hybrid raid to get your 16tb or close to that as they are not actually 4000gb like 3820gb or something. I think they even make a 5 bay one now.

I use the ds213j...its just a two bay in Raid 1 configuration....have a couple of them hanging around ....each with 4GB WD Red NAS drives.....As an example of some of the versatility of their products, if you do a DS415+ (has to be a + model) and need more space at a later time.........you can purchase the DX415 for additional storage (the price of the DX415 is much less and hooks up via eSATA interface of the DS415+). The DS415+ accepts 4 hard drives.
