AAE Setup help

I'm sure this has been answered before but I can't seem to find anything in this new forum.

I've setup AAE and it's running mostly fine but it always stretches to fill the screen. The 4:3 option in the emulator does nothing and neither does changing the ini settings. I tried adding a bezel but it basically covers the sides of the screen but the game is still running fully stretched behind it. Running it in a window only gives me a small window in the middle of the screen.

Another thing I noticed is that in Asteroids (original not deluxe), pressing the shield button makes my ship disappear.

I know I could use mame and use Gigapigs excellent vector settings but it still doesn't give me that full effect that AAE does (plus it requires a lot more setting up).

If I remember there is a button that makes you disappear but really it's a Random wrap drive :-)

Sounds like either your bezel is missing an ini or the ahk setting needs to be changed. Like there is an option in bezel parts of the module that may help fix resolution

2. Fix Resolution Mode:

The fix resolution mode is used when the emulator does not allow the game to be resized according the window size. That means, when the game is presented always at a fixed resolution configured at the emulator.

In this mode the game window will be moved to the screen center and the bezel image will be draw around it so the screen gap corresponds to the fixed game window resolution. Any parts of the bezel image that does not fit the screen will be cropped in this mode.

To use the fix resolution mode you just need to add to the BezelStart function line in your module the parameter "fixResMode".

BezelGUI()

BezelStart("fixResMode")

BezelDraw()

BezelExit()

Thanks. That works but when I die in asteroids for example, the end game text is stretched full screen and under the bezel. Not sure of yours does the same.

If I set the AAE bezels to true than it works fine but I wanted to use my own bezels.

I can't even add an image to show my problem "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community" Really? Can't use a jpg or png? I hate these new forums!!!

I just got AAE working perfectly in widescreen last week.

Only AAE version Update 2 has correct ratio widescreen support. Update 1 won't show correctly on a widescreen monitor no matter what you do. I gave up on trying to use bezels with AAE though. The built in ones weren't coded for widescreen so they are either stretched or small, but either way the ratio is wrong. Hyperspin Bezels will "half" work, however they won't fill the screen and the best you can get is a ratio that is almost correct, but obviously wrong. I just turned them off and due to the vector graphics it looks great that way.

These settings are great.

Windowed - No

Resolution - 1280x1024 (going higher messes up the ratio, going lower looks bad. 1280 is juuuust right)

Vsync - Enabled

Game Aspect - 4:3 on 16:9

Oh yeah and you're right. Update 2 AAE looks far better than MAME running these games. It's night and day. I can't believe it's just been sitting there at an unfinished update 2 for years and nobody has picked it up and finished its features.

I run with the windowed fullscreen option in RLUI, looks great in bezels.

Interesting. So in the new Rocketlauncher the bezels work at the correct ratio (I'm still using the last version of HLHQ)? When you say WIndowed Fullscreen do you mean Windowed = No?

Tanks. Those settings work to get proper 4:3 but I can't get the bezel to show and hyperpause won't work with the emulator in full screen.

Guess I'll have to live with the stretched screen for now.

It was actually the built in AAE bezels that were running for me. I was saying the Fullscreen option in RLUI is selected to Windowed Fullscreen. I had the bezelmode set on the option that uses aae bezels.

Not sure if I tried that combination. I'll try to give it a shot.

Got it working perfectly. Thanks everyone.

Got it working perfectly how? Update 1 or 2? With bezels? Hyperspin or AAE versions? Screen ratios are right?

Details man!

My settings will give you the largest playing area while making Hyperpause functional. Unfortunately the emulator needs to run in windowed mode for Hyperpause to work meaning that the bezel needs to hide the bottom and top of the emulator window,

AAE Update 2

Latest Rocketlauncher AAE Modules

AAE Settings:

Windowed - Yes
Resolution - 1280x1024
Vsync - Enabled
Game Aspect - 4:3 on 16:9

RocketLauncher Settings (AAE module):

Windowed Full Screen

Use RockerLauncher Bezels

Bezel (I created this quickly):

Download and extract both files to your bezel location.

Make sure you have artwork and overlays on. Some games like Barrier also need to have bezels on. You can play around with the setting on a per game basis.

Also make sure you start fresh. Delete the game ini files from the cfg folder in the AAE emulator folder.

Cool.

So with these settings the game is running in a correct 4:3 ratio, just cropped a bit top and bottom? Are the bezels filling the full left/right sides?

I've got mine perfect for me so I'm hesitant to play around with it.
