what 5v devices do you have shifters? i have found alot of "5v" devices still respond to 3.3 signals nicely the amount of times iv talked to chips that say they r "5v" input level but i just connect them to a 3.3v stm32 and the quite happy chat away you can also get level converter chips
-
sounds about right, when ordering xpin you need to ask for the 5v version, as the other version is designed to be a plug and play for a real pinball as it feeds off the 65v source, but as most cab users have a nice 5v source from the psu its much easier to use the 5v version even though the pinDMD2 still shows up as a device im hoping having the un-powered DMD connected to it has not blown the dmd gpio drivers. hopefully its ok
-
i love the way they used the standard hdd molex connector as it really does make it plug and play, wish the other DMD's would do the same!!! lol id love to see the pick and place machine placing all 4096 little 0603 leds as well LOL
-
i think those will be extremely rare wowter as not many where made. one dude on vpforums had one but for some reason it wouldn't work correctly with pinDMD1 although it might be ok with pinDMD2 hehe.
-
Im pretty sure xpin is 5v
-
noooooooooooooooooo the dmd needs its own power!!! this is very important, only the pinDMD2 device is powered using the usb! you need to power your xpin using another 2amp power source (your pc psu is a good one) xpin / pinLED connected to a pinDMD can blow it to pieces as the dmd tries to draw 2amps through the pinDMD it does say this in the install guide in a big red warning box hopefully the pinDMD dmd gpio is still alive connect your DMD to 5v using the power header on the DMD and hopefully the pinDMD is not dead hehe.
-
Ok its alive. But nothing shows up on the DMD? What voltage are you powering the DMD? Is the ribbon cable plugged in firmly both ends?
-
xpin needs the signal from pinDMD firmware (not pc) if the pinDMD is plugged into the DMD and the pinDMD is plugged into the pc using a usb cable you should see the firmware logo on the DMD. if you dont some thing is wrong!!! does the pinDMD show up as a 'pinDMD2' device on your pc? (best way to confirm its alive)

im just gonna wait another 2-3 weeks make sure people are doing ok with current batch. if all goes ok i will get another batch made. iv ordered all the components and have 90% of them. and will hopefully be getting the next x100 batch assembled soon already have 70ish back order from previous batch + new orders so think this next batch will be gone by march as well!

the first game was one of the techs i did not support because there was to many alphanumeric segments to fit on the dmd i think. so the dmd will just stay blank. the second game with the flickering digits is a bug in the alphanumeric frame work in the .dll nothing to do with the pinDMD you can turn the pinDMD off by adding some code to the table, i cant remember off the top of my head what it is its in the pinDMD2 dev thread over at vpforums, ill try and track it down. by watching that video the pinDMD is behaving correctly, its the .dll code which either does not support the game or has a few glitches with the game hehe. (i don't spend to much time mending alphanumeric game glitches as there are thousands of these games)
-
what was wrong with the games boogies2 where these both 128x32 dmd games? ah just did a search and found those games. regarding the pinDMD2 not working with those games, this is not a fault with the pinDMD2. its just those games and quite a few others are not supported by the special pinDMD pinmame.dll there was way to many games to cover so only a few core pinball techs are covered. the pinDMD was only originally ment to support 128x32 games but i added quite a bit of code to support as many alphanumeric games i could. but if you find some of these games don't work its not a fault with the pinDMD hardware but the .dll simply does not support those games.
-
dead pixels suck, we really need to get these plasma dmd's up and running hope you get that future pinball .dll soon as the pinDMD does a lot more then show a simple logo
-
no worries let me know how it goes if any one ever has any problems the offer to test any pinDMD's is always there
-
ok doesn't seam to be a dead pixel then, does your faint line remain when the DMD should be blank. the reason i don't think these faults r pinDMD related is because there is around 60ish pinDMD1's running that DMD with out any problems, running the same firmware as you. and normally when there are firmware issues it seams to upset the whole display or every one see's the same fault. but in these 2 cases (and a few others) it seams to be 1 random column seams to be faulty. (iv seen it for my self with my pinLED, and it was a DMD fault) which leads me to believe its a DMD fault not pinDMD/firmware fault. if you want you can send the pinDMD back to me and i can test it for you (on 3 different DMD's hehe) to confirm that the pinDMD/firmware is ok Let me know
-
DMD's are a pain lol Plasma ones leak gas and go all funny or the paper ribbon cable on the side gets detached and kills whole rows/columns. LED ones seam to have dead pixel faults which intern cause faint lines to appear. out of 235 pinDMD's sold iv heard/seen about 6 dodgy DMD's (mostly pinLED lol) 1 or 2 Vishay and 1 Plasma vishay
-
@rotoforever from the image i can see the 8th pixel down on the faint line the pixel is not lit up? can you play a few games and see if this pixel has died? on my pinLED i has a dead pixel and it caused a faint line to appear like on your displays but at some point the faint line disappeared and the pixel remained dead. its like when a pixel dies it slightly shorts out a whole column. which DMD are you running rotoforever
-
ok that's interesting, from what i can see from the video the faint column remains even when the display is totally blank? at this point the firmware is writing 0's to the dot data, basically turning all pixels off. does not seam like a board fault to me. again with the slightly different 8x8 matrix segments being slightly different shade, there is no reason the firmware would target certain matrix and make it another shade. seams more like a faulty or slightly out of tolerance 8x8 matrix segment. but i'm more then happy to test the board my self to confirm this
-
i see, do you want to send back the pinDMD so i can test it?
-
cool, is it the 8x8 matrix style or the single 0603 led style? (another member on vpforums had column issues with his vishay 8x8 matrix style display, this might be the same problem?)
-
boogies2 - which display is it. 1 column been stuck on sounds more like a display fault then a firmware/board fault when the pinDMD1 gets to hot the whole display will start showing garbage or if the firmware is wrong for the DMD again it will show just garbage. 1 stuck column sounds like a faulty shift register in the display. I have a 1 spare pinDMD1 if you would like to send it back for a swap. this way we can confirm if its the board/pinDMD1
-
the Vishay Plasma runs off 12v
-
I have always had good service with mouser as i order quite a few components for the pinDMD2 from them, shipping is insanely fast seeing as its coming from texas (last stuff came in 3 days!!!!!)
-
its a weird problem mike i think after trying 3 different pinDMD's / 3 ribbon cables / two PSU's it must be the display the previous bug was with the pinLED so wouldn't even effect the Plasma displays, another member has exact same display and its working great. and they work great on my own Plasma. so i can only assume it must be a DMD problem unless you live in some huge static bubble hehe? I have had mouser swap displays before so it should be fine keep me updated
-
just make sure u cut the +12v feed on the molex lol
-
does sound like a xpin display, i think they are the only ones making blue dmd's? shame the foam is left on in the picture as under it would be all the xpin logo silk screen hehe. Aurich - do you still have the blown display? you might find only a few components are fried but 95% of the display still works, might be repairable?
