Whats up!

I posted over on BYOAC but thought I'd broaden my horizons for input over here.  Long story short, my first hyperspin cabinet is gone, sold to the brother in law for cost of materials.  Looking to build a more polished machine than the first one.  Not that it was bad, but just spend a bit more time on the carpentry and design of it. There is a fella over on those forums who I owe a lot of credit to, OND.  He has a thread over there that shows step by step how to build a machine, with plans.  I'm taking some of his ideas, some of mine, and trying to tie it all together with some artwork yet to be decided.

New design, like I said I'm not sure on artwork but I think I'm leaning towards a lighting theme (I'm not a huge fan of any game in particular, so I'd hate to build a MK cabinet when I really don't like MK) so I'd like to keep it kind of generic.

Monitor will be 24" LCD.

Not sure about computer yet.  Maybe you guys can help me out there?  Also no experience with either but damn intrigued by LED blinky and howler controls.  Input on both much appreciated.

Here's a pic of my proposed machine, and the old machine in her new home.

Now for the computer, forgive me but I have no idea how to decipher processor speeds.

Would this machine be sufficient to run HS/SFIV/Dreamcast/N64 games?  Not too excited on spending a pile of cash on a computer, but don't want it to lag either.

Dell Optiplex 780
Core 2 Duo 3.16GHZ
1TB HD
4 GB DDR3
WIN 7

I have a core 2 duo 1.86ghz with 2gb ram and onboard intel graphics and it plays hyperspin with videos + artwork no problem. It runs mame with no issues, even runs tekken tag and tekken 2 no worries, all me neogeo and capcom games run no issues too. I wouldnt know if sf4 would run but its not that demanding of a game and you can tweak the settings, i'd say go for it.

Thanks, I think I'm going to have to go with this computer or similar regardless as any noticeable step up in processor would be practically double the price.

NullDC will be ok, demul needs a bit more power (and a decent videocards, this emulator is a bit gpu-bound). As far as I remember all sf4 versions and sf4Xtekken use only 2 cores and they run flawlessy on my q6600 2.4ghz. Mortal kombat complete works flawlessy too but as far as i remember it use more than 2 cores.

Tekken 2 and tekken tag are not 100% on a core 2 duo/quad, they really need a core i.

Also, go with at least 8GB ram. i5-2400 is perfect with its low power draw. An eBay seller had a few i5 8GB Dell's going for around $140 shipped this weekend. I lost one auction because I did not have my Paypal account linked. As it turns out, I scored an i7-940 based XPS 730x local pickup only for $80 two hours later on eBay. As luck would have it, it had dual Radeon HD4890's which are the highest boards that work with Calamity drivers (i'm interfacing to an arcade monitor and need 15khz). Worked out in the end.

If you plan on wiring an external power switch on you cabinet, DELL motherboards do not have standard power switch posts.  The power switch is wired through a 24-pin ribbon cable.  DELL does not release the pin out configurations since it is a proprietary design.  I had a DELL, it frustrated me enough to get rid of it and use the processor/ram on a new mother board.

Interesting about the Dell.  I have purchased a RGB power strip with dedicated source/remote for all of the auxiliary cabinet lighting, and the buttons will be lit by the keyboard encoder (Ipac ulitmate IO).

PCs off ebay, always stayed away...but like the sounds of these deals.  If you find something interesting please don't hesitate to let me know.  I don't know my way around computers all that well so it would have to be something already built, with OS (windows 7 64) installed.

Parts update:

Ended up going with a refurb i5 650 instead of the 2400 and put some money elsewhere.  Win pro 7 64 bit, 250g hdd,  8gb ram and a radeon 7600 card from a previous build.

Joysticks, trackball, spinner and light gun ordered from Ultimarc, RGB buttons from Groovy game gear.

Most people get all excited when that stuff comes in not me I prefer the woodworking side of everything!!!  Each one gets easier to wire and configure but still not my favorite part!!! I assume with the build you have in mind the trackball will be lit up Blue?? Oh please let us know what you think of the gun!!! I haven't used one of those from aimtrak yet!!

Nah I love the woodworking part of it too.  I'm 90% about the building and 10% about the playing.  I havent decided on a color yet but I am going themeless and wrapping it with auto vinyl.  I ordered a sample book of 75 colors from Vvivid vinyl so it should be fun picking out a few to work together.  Thats why its nice going with RGB. :)  Will definitely report back on the aimtrak.

Little update, got the "feet" done.

Volume control:

So I'm using an old set of Logitech 2.1 speakers.  Fortunately these speakers are 4 ohm (same as car audio) so I will use the subwoofer/control unit and exchange the 2 front speakers for 4" car speakers which are easy to mount and look good on a cabinet.

For volume control I'm using a PAC LC-1 which primary use is in car audio for subwoofer control, but the principal is the same:

In line with one of these from the computer:

And one of these to the speakers.

Both computer and 2.1 volume will be on max by default and volume will be controlled by the LC1 knob.

LC1 stripped of its housing:

Mounting area routed to ~1/8" thick

Volume knob in place on cabinet:

You can get all kinds of volume knobs if you want.  I got a larger diameter one coming in the mail to match the arcade buttons on the admin panel better.
