MAME CHD questions

Ok, I've always been a bit funny when it came to mame CHD... for years I always wondered why my rom folder had additional folders for certain games.. for the most part I would keep them there but over the years I used to actually delete some of those extra folders.. not knowing I really needed them.

Anyways I now know what the CHD are and what they are for.. my question is are people adding them on a per game basis or are people adding them in bulk? I have a mame 149 set and recently started getting mame 149 CHDs but I also noticed that some of the games I have CHD for actually run fine without even adding the CHD. so my next question is... why are so many games in my 149 mame set running without me adding the CHD (for example.. I have redearth.chd but the redearth.zip in my 149 set seems to run without me adding the .CHD)

Is there a way for me to find out which CHD I actually need other than me trying to run the game and it telling me I'm missing the CHD?

As of right now I'm probably doing it wrong but I'm just looking thru the CHD files that I have and if I notice a interesting or familiar filename... I try to find the .zip and run it from mame and if it doesn't run I'm adding the CHD but like I said a few games seem to already be running fine without me adding the CHD

Some excellent questions and I'll just throw my two cents in.

I was under the impression that games with a corresponding chd file needed it to run. Not if there is a list of which ones don't need them.

What I do know is that there is a large proportion of chd games that aren't working so you could save yourself some space by just choosing specific working games.

Here is an old list of working chd games that I took a look at

I keep the roms and CHDs 100%. Can't think of any good reason to delete them other than creating unnecessary work for myself.

Are you that tight on space? Plus if you delete those CHDs you will probably have to download a ton more to update your set.

I'd also really, really suggest you update from that 149 set. The improvements from that version to 167 (or 167) are pretty huge, especially for HLSL and GLSL.

Keep copies of some of those older Roms for any emu's that still use old ones (AAE uses 149 roms. Demul?)
