THK Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I understand that, I'm just speaking more conceptually. As I said, something being illegal doesn't have any bearing on whether it's right or wrong. That's a separate debate. The concept I brought up regarding it is how the reasons for it being illegal, in my opinion, don't seem to have any bearing on 30 year old products that are no longer available to purchase. As result on a PERSONAL note, I don't hold issue with people selling roms. Never done it, not saying anyone SHOULD do it, nor do I condone ripping people off in the fashion these pre-configured drives people are doing. My issue with them is selling shoddy products with pisspoor customer service and atrocious romsets. If they sold it in a clean, concise, easy to use/update way with even a half-decent setup for the roms... I'd have no personal quarrell with it what-so-ever. I just mean it's just one more thing that' wrong with what they're doing. I have nothing against roms being shared or sold to anyone who is dumb enough to buy them. On a side note, I think the copyright system is crooked as fck. Things should be common domain after it's initial money making period is over. Like what's the deal with songs being able to be owned up to like 70 years after the artist dies...... total bullcrap. Old games should be free domain. As long as their intellectual property is still being used, like there still being new Mario games made, nobody should be able to make Mario games of course, but 10yo games should just be freely downloadable. ..........................back with a vengeance........................
Rotgut Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I hear you, it sounds deceptive. My thinking is, for example, I have friends who have watched me put together my hyperspin build over the last 2 years who had never even heard of an emulator/rom and have (without my prompting) offered me pretty sums of cash to give them a copy once I am done. I've told them it's all available for free online but they are like "Screw that, I don't even know half of what you are talking about when it comes to this thing, I just know I want one too. I'll pay you for the time it took you to get it going, just so I don't have to deal with it." BINGO! We have a winner!! Not only do some people not * know * how to do this, there are some people who simply do - not - have - the - time to do this. Whether they have crazy work schedules or they are tied up with family issues or other priorities or whatever. They should not be labeled as lazy a**holes just because they don't want to dedicate weeks/months/years of their time getting video games to run properly. That doesn't make them a "bad guy." Me, personally? I love tinkering with HS and the emulators and the roms and the artwork and videos, etc...... it has become my hobby and dare I say it — an obsession. I've spent untold man hours since, probably 2000, messing with emulators and roms in my spare time. For me, it really is fun despite the occasional hair-pulling moments of frustration. Plus, I enjoy interacting with you guys here in the forums and other places online. It's all good.

I completely agree, working on Hyperspin has become my main hobby, and yeah... sometimes an obsession (I have to FORCE myself to step away for like a week sometimes) It's a blast getting all the programs to work together, and the name-schemes just the way you want them... and the THEMES, my god I've spent so much time creating new themes lol. As far as the forums, I couldn't do it without everyone here. Not just for the assistance, but honestly just for the friendly nature of being able to TALK to someone about what I do all day lol. Every friend I know is a party-animal or a jock, so this is hardly their cup of tea. My fiance likes games, but doesn't really get into tech stuff at all, so this whole thing bores the hell out of here until I hand her a 2nd controller lol. It's just nice to know I'm not alone I guess lol thank god for the internet.
rastan Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 there are people that build pre-built cabinets and while this may seem strange for me to agree with that but I do.... on the other hand the pre configured drives that are sold are just a bunch of drama waiting to happen... however I would agree that many people don't have the knowledge or the time... but all the time it's gonna take to fix the problems they would be better off putting in the initial time. my beef is more with the people that are ripping people off..... I mean mame 149? really... they can't even update mame (the easiest to setup and complete) before they sell their drives.. I like the oldschool code of things... don't ask don't tell where we get the stuff from... and definitely don't try to profit off other peoples work.
Avar Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 It's so obviously a ripoff too if you ever watch the YouTube videos of these charlatans. They have comments and like button deactivated and they very clearly skip over the systems that don't have readily available artwork.

Yeah... any video with comments disabled is instantly marked as BS in my book lol I just have a problem with people doing things half-***ed as if that's an acceptable thing to do. It's like my dad used to say when he beat my *** for not doing something right: "Do it right, or don't do it at all!" lol He was a **** but he was a smart ****.
Rotgut Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Yeah... any video with comments disabled is instantly marked as BS in my book lol So true.
gigapig Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Anyone notice something similar here?? https://kodi.tv/the-piracy-box-sellers-and-youtube-promoters-are-killing-kodi/
JoyStickKilla Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Piracy continues to be a successful market?
