How to update MESS?

I just setup MESS 159 from Simply Austins video & downloads and have it setup and launching a couple SNES games from RL and from the HS wheel.

However this version is ancient. I want to update it to the newest version so I can actually run up-to-date HLSL or GLSL effects.

Problem is I've been searching and messing around with it for a couple hours and can find no instructions on actually updating it or what additional files/folders I need.

I've tried replacing the MESS exe's with the latest version, deleting the ini's etc... but once I try to update it it stops working.

The files at the actual MESSUI site seem to have nothing but the exe's and none of the additional files needed. I've tried bringing over some newer MAME files, but that also didn't work.

Anyone have a link to a fairly up-to-date GLSL enabled version of MESSUI with all the necessary files?

Is going with the latest MAME release not an option? They're integrated now so that would likely be the easiest solution.

Are you saying download the latest MAME/Mess version and then just dump the MESSUI exe's on top of those files?

I'll give that a shot. I didn't even think of trying it since I was assuming it worked like MAMEUIFX and required its own specific folder/files.

I need to update my MAME myself but I imagine that you'd be fine with the MAME UI for the latest release without having to copy MESSUI over like that. Hope that helps. Lemme know how it goes as I'll be following suit shortly.

that is all you need to update,   You should run a system audit maybe your bios need to be updated.

Download Austins MESS pack,   drag and drop the latest MESS and MESSUI exes in the folder,  update the Bios and you will be running the latest version of MESS.

I don't know if Austin did this on purpose but I had to update the default settings,  because the INIs where being saved on the Main Mess folder and not in the default INIs folder.

Well just tried the MAMEdevs build of 171 and dropped the MESSUI exe on it, but hell if I can get it to work.

You really don't need to update but like Avar said mame and mess have merged so if you truly want to update get the latest version of mame.

You're saying there's a way to run GLSL such as the Geom HQ shader in MESS 159? If so I'd love to know how since that's all I'm trying to do.

If you're running MAME .162 or newer and are using a PD MAME romset you're all set to run the former MESS systems. All you have to do is set MAME as the default emu in RLUI and set the MAME_bios_path in the module settings to your MAME rompath (since the PD sets have all the bios files in there). I'm pretty sure that's all you need to do.

I'm not following you there... Right now I have MESSUI 159 running, but without any GLSL (at least that I can see). The only reason I want to update it is to get the GEOM HQ shader working. All I need MESS for right now is 2 SNES games and that's it. so I'm not running a full MESS romset. (for actual MAME I run a separate MAMEUIFX build).

Yeah... Just drop in the exe's to replace the old 159 exe's and it should work?

I'll mess with that a bit more then, maybe I just missed something. I still didn't see any GLSL options in the 171 UI though.

Yeah. Did that and did get it to work (I had a dialogue pop-up keeping it from working the first time).

However with the 171 exe's in there the games will launch, but crash on exit. Trying to run HLSL on makes them close immediately after launching and still no GLSL options...

Soooo ef it. I went back to 159 and will just run a more basic HLSL setup.

I've already messed with it far, far longer than I will ever even play those games for.

As with all things HS/RL it'll turn out to be something dead simple that I'm overlooking.
