Mapping Mame controls per game

I have mame .156 setup in Hyperspin and when I open mame manually on my PC I press tab on my keyboard and nothing happens.  I want to setup special controls for the fighting games like Street Fighter etc.

Can I just edit the individual config. files that get created for each game when they're launched or is there some other way to setup custom controls per game?  I would like to use the easiest and quickest way.

Thanks in advance.

The real question is: why isn't TAB working? Mame handles it's own per game configs fine.

I got the tab key to work.  I setup the 6 keys the way I want to play the Street Figher (original) game on my X-Arcade tankstick.  5 of the keys work.  The bottom-left button that is mapped to fast kick like it would be in the arcade doesn't work.  The tankstick outputs a left-shift when that key is pressed and that's what I have mapped in mame.  However when I press that button in the game the character does nothing.  So I have 5 of the 6 buttons mapped as needed.  Anyone know if Mame64.exe (.156 version) has an issue with mapping a button to shift or left shift?  I have no idea why just this one key doesn't work.  When I open a notepad document and press that button on my Tankstick it does record a shift.  I press that button and the Z button and it does make a capital letter Z.

Only thing I can think of is that mame is using the left shift for something already... go through the general controls and remove left shift from anything other than your desired function.

Just checked my mame "user interface" controls. Looks like left shift is used as a modifier for emu commands. Any way you can change it on tankstick?

There's a way to customize the controls but it's a bit of a pain and something I totally wanted to avoid.  I had already looked through all the controls in MAME for all 3 areas and could not find shift anywhere.  Where do you see it and is it something you can map to another button?

You should be able to remap... check "user interface" under controls in mame64
