Advice for emulators other than MAME?

Hey all, I set up HyperSpin with MAME and although it seems like most of the classic games are there, is there any real reason to install other emulators?

I was considering installing ones for Atari, NES, ColecoVision, and maybe a few others, but it seems like MAME already covers them all.

Thanks :)

Mame covers a lot of systems but certain emulators are better for each system...  I'd get a NES emulator for NES and other systems like that.

Mame probably does a better job with Atari and systems like that I guess...

I'd go RetroArch for any classic consoles. The control's are a breeze to setup and then you can make use of the extensive shaders.

Personally I can't stand MAME, I feel like the whole UI is just a MESS. (Pun intended)

Thanks for your replies! :) If I install multiple emulators like RetroArch and MAME, do I need to specify which emulator a game would use, or can the person playing decide?

You'd have to set which emulator it would boot the game in while inside RocketLauncher UI.

That's an awesome idea though, like if you could tell retroarch to pop up a quick box in HS when you select a game that would say "which emulator" and choose from a list. That's probably unrealistic though from an implementation point of view. :(

What do other Emulators need advice for?

I would advise SSF to go open source, but we know that's never going to happen.

Isn't that advice for it's developers? ;)

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the exact way I should set this up. MAME certainly doesn't help since it covers so many games.. lol

In my case, at least for one of my HyperSpin setups, I'm certainly not going to install every ROM for every system. It would be more about the games themselves. So take a game like Donkey Kong, it would be cool to have that under the MAME, Colecovision, Intellivision, and Arcade Classics wheels. Hopefully using the same ROM and media if possible. Donkey Kong was also released on Atari 2600 which I'm assuming would have to be a different ROM since it looks totally different.

The same would go for Pac Man, Centipede, Qbert, or any other classic game released on multiple systems. If a game was only an arcade game and NES game, I'd want it under MAME, NES, and Arcade Classics. The NES version would use RetroArch or Nestopia, and the others probably MAME.

I hope that made sense. :)

.....why would you have MAME & Arcade Classics? Isn't the latter just a renaming of the former, because MAME isn't really a system but an emu/collection of arcade games? (like having a console systems wheel and a retroarch wheel for instance)

Two examples of that would be games like Punchout and Contra. They've been emulated a lot better on RetroArch/Nestopia than MAME.

I'd like to have them under MAME, but also under NES that runs it far better using Nestopia. The difference probably isn't THAT noticeable, but I'd like everything under NES and Arcade Classics to run under Nestopia, meanwhile keeping MAME-specific games running MAME under that wheel.

You are losing me with saying under Mame and saying Arcade Classics.

So do you have a single MAME wheel and also an Arcade Classics wheel? Or are you talking specifically about a MESS wheel for console stuff and then you have the MAME arcade titles split out into a separate Arcade Classics wheel?

You can have multiple 'systems' under 1 wheel. So just have the Arcade classics wheel and have some of it's games pointed to another emu.

I guess your question should be rephrased to "What Arcade games run better on other emulators then MAME?"
