OpenEmu (Mac Frontend)

I was planning on using my current iMac, after I get a new one, and using it for a new build.

Use bootcamp to boot into Windows automatically but might not have to go that route now - http://openemu.org.

I was not aware of this project but it looks really nice. Anyone else try it in-depth? Wondering if it would be worth going that route because I would love to keep Mac OS.

Before anyone starts saying how HS is better, has more features etc... I know that already. I have a full build in my living room and I have nothing against it. Just want a different project now :D

I found this the other day but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. it looks like it could be good.

Tried it, works pretty much as advertised. It's crowning feature is definitely the ability to have all your systems available in such a clean "Mac-esque" format - making your games organised and presentable. OpenEmu's interface kind of reminds me of Boxer, a Mac-only MS-DOS client (highly recommended). Editable controls and gamepad support are a welcome addition too, but I was disappointed with the lack of support for some of the stranger systems that I can run in HyperSpin, and even more so for common systems like MAME. (although they're probably coming in a later release).

While I don't see myself using it too often, I can see this being a godsend for Mac users who want an alternative to having folders upon folders of roms and emulators. Just go download and install it! It's only 20MB or so.

I had it installed and was playing around with it a little bit, and from what I can tell there is not much to it - no installation, basic configurations and drag and drop or scan for ROMS. I was wondering more about how well it will do comparing to HS when it comes to being able to control everything with a controller and not use key/mouse.

It is a bit strange that they do not support MAME but I guess current support is just major consoles from the era.

OpenEmu retrieves pretty much every single No-Intro box art automatically, once a ROM has been dragged into the interface.

This includes all Japanese titles and pretty much everything that is not a prototype.

Any idea where they got that huge database or how to access it (files get encrypted within the app's library)?

I don't use a mac, but I went and checked out that website. WOW that looks slick as hell. I love the controller input screens they have for each controller to map it. The interface with cover art looks really nice too, with a search feature even! While I like having themes and videos and wheel art, man this is still really cool.

I love HyperSpin and OpenEmu equally. They so alike and extremely different at the same time. Glad I can use both :D
