How do you create transitions?

Hi all,

 

i'm currently underway on my quest to create a emulationstation like main menu for hyperspin. so far my test setup works really well. the only thing that is bothering me immensely are the transitions when selecting a system in the main menu. the standard transitions don't work well in this particular theme. i also tried a setup without any transitions but thats not really what I'm looking for either.

 

i'm completely clueless as to how you create a custom transition. again i'd like something similar to the look of emulationstation which basically fades the background out and in again when selecting a system.

a transition like this or a similar minimalistic design would be awesome.

 

so my questions basically are:

 

1) how do you create a transition?

2) does it have to be in a .flv format like the standard transitions

3) do i need to create in a certain resolution? (and other restrictions)

4) is it even possible to create such transitions?

They are FLVs created with transparencies and tagged with info to let HS know when they cover the entire screen, so HS knows the exact point to switch.

There was a thread recently with more info and I believe even a link to the detailed info.

i think i found the thread you were talking about (http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/topic/25724-emulator-selection-transition/?hl=transition). basically you need to create an flv with cue points.

 

sadly adobe dropped the .flv format with current software. you can't export flv's anymore. not even the media encoder, which (as far as i understood it) could embed those cue points into the flv, supports flv anymore.

 

does anyone know if you can use the newer .mp4 format for transitions in hyperspin?

 

pretty much all i want is having a transition video for hyperspin that fades to black and then to the next screen. so basically the transition would be: "alpha channel" -> black -> "alpha channel" as a simple video.

 

well maybe someone can help me.

Yes that's the thread. No idea about your MP4 question.

But if you just want a basic fade-in/fade-out transition there are already a few like that included in HyperSPin if I remember right.

You should simply be able to delete all the ones you don't want to use and keep the ones you do.

Well I just checked and I guess there maybe isn't a simple fade. I thought one of the ones named "Swipe" would be what you want, but they don't fade at all. Still you might try them to see if you like one of them. The multi-square one is cool. It's also possible that one of the flare, smoke or particle ones might come close to what you want. I didn't check every single one of my 95 transitions... I'll leave that to you.

hey first of all thank you metalzoic for checking. i have a standard hyperspin installation and there are override transitions for every system and four generic hyperspin transitions in the ./media/frontend folder (just the hyperspin "coin" flipping over the screen). so there are about 15-20 of them in total i think. the only one that fits half-decent in my current setup is the atari2600 override transition (coloured stripes moving over the screen in a pattern).

i read that there are a lot more on the hyperspin premium ftp but sadly i have no access to it so i can't say if there are some good ones in there.

 

i'll try to get hold of an old copy of adobe after effects and media encoder and see what i can do, i guess.

 

if someone here is familiar with creating transitions with cue points for hyperspin and likes to write a little how-to on the whole process, let me know. not only would that be awesome and i'd be forever thankful but i also think it would be good for the community. information on transition seem a little vague in general and it would be a shame if at some point no one would know any longer how they work.

Weird. My Hyperspin install came with tons of transitions. I think I only added about 15 more or so from the FTP.

Maybe they just don't include them anymore.
