wesfranks
If you look at my build video (look at m3:20s) the mb is mounted to the bottom of the cab with plastic feet, the cards / video card screw to a wooden bracket which is not hard to make. No need to spend any money on this. Laughing at myself due to my instinctive reaction against screwing computer parts to wood for fear of EMF radiation and electrostatic discharge. This while sitting 1.5 ft from two computers- one the open air case, the other with the sides removed due to impending death of my cpu cooling fan. And yet while I was building the open air system, I found myself dutifully installing the I/O shield like I always have. Silly. No, do not spend any money on this unless you really need/want to. ninja2bceen
This is all super info. So I'm going to unplug, remove the side cases for sure. Hopefully there is a tray here and that should help with things. I had another thread about connecting pc power to a button, this is probably a good time to do that too. I have a slot for it already made just never got to actually doing it. In genera with this old computer, if I were to update anything, it would be cpu for sure and maybe a graphics card. Would there be anything else? Is it as easy as just swapping those out or is welding involve. Sorry for the newbie questions
wesfranks
Historically, PC makers like HP make it difficult to plan an upgrade path due to their use of non-standard boards and hard soldering parts to the board to cut down on costs. Also, if it is WinXP era, that is prior to PCI Express so even a graphics card upgrade would be interesting. Any upgrades would depend on your particular computer. You have to match mobo chipsets, cpu, and memory so one upgrade tends to lead to another. But from your other posts, it seems like you are running a good variety of systems. Your cabinet is very complete, trackball, fighting sticks, 4 and 8 way stations and is that a spinner. Majorspawn is right- super clean bezel and convenient ports for controllers. Definitely keep you wife involved. Always a good thing. As to the artwork, you got me wondering what music games you have on there?
ninja2bceen
Thanks. As for music games nothing in particular that stands out other than what you will find in the official xmls. Yes it crawls with ps2 and wii. Sounds like if I try updating, I'll just have to update something else and may be in my best interest to just update a number of things. I think simply Austin has a computer for 65 bucks to run all but ps2. To run that though I'm sure you just need a stronger cpu?
majorspawn
I have a 9 year old pc in my cabinet running a q6600 quad @3.2ghtz on air with 8gb 240ssd and a nvidia gtx 770. I use to have an ati 6950 which was fine also. For wii you need something which is multicore above 3ghtz and a semi average gpu. Wii uses mainly cpu vs. Gpu. I wonder if this would run wiiu? I can run dead rising 3 with decent setting on this rig or do i need current gen? Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk
ninja2bceen
Cool Well I run fine I think to wii but say I play mame for a a few minutes it gets crazy hot in there without the fan on obviously at the top
wesfranks
You may get different advice as to various cooling methodologies, but I think the important thing is to be able to check your system to see if it is running too hot. In other words, if your cabinet cooling is OK, really good, or needs improvement. Check the software page on the website http://www.cpuid.com/ and download the regular version of HWMonitor. You may have to run it as Administrator, but it will give you information about your system including cpu temps. You will want to check your cpu temps both at idle and under load to see if it is exceeding the recommended operating parameters for your particular cpu. A Google search about your cpu and max temps will give you that information. If you don't know what cpu you have, a utility on the same page CPU-Z will give you that information. On the "Bench" tab of CPU-Z is also a "Stress CPU" button so you can run a basic stress test on your cpu allowing you to check your temps with HWMonitor with the cpu under load. You can run these utilities side by side so you can see what is going on. Since this is an older system, I would not run the stress test for too long. Just long enough to get a consistent upper and lower number. If the temp under load is a minimum of 10 degrees or below the max operating temperature of your cpu, you should be OK. If you are anywhere closer to that number, I would definitely recommend adding to or improving your cooling. It would be good to also test HWMonitor running during the normal usage of your cabinet. While you will not get a running commentary (since you will be playing full screen), you can check the utility after a normal playing period and see what the max levels during that time were. If they get anywhere close to the max, you know you will have to make improvements. Just make sure to clear the min/max values before you begin your session. Metalzoic
No fan in my cab at all (other than the 2 or 3 built into the GPU) and I've never had an issue with heat. However it isn't fully enclosed, there is a small section of the lower back of the cab that is open. PC is built into a squat Cooler Master case. Easy to remove to clean or work on (I'll never have the PC mounted internally again), but squat so it can't tip over when moving the cab.
ninja2bceen
So if I go this route http://www.bestbuy.com/site/cooler-master-haf-xb-evo-black/5581085.p?id=bb5581085&skuId=5581085 You recommend just a small opening on the back of the cabinet? Is this the same case you are using?
thcdgaf
Still on my to do... An intake and out take fan. What size fans are recommended and brand? Looking for an effective, but ultra quiet fanpersonally not built cabinet but I would say few exhaust fans and mini air conditioner setup lolretroarch basic and core tutorials coming soon

Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk Sounds a lot like my rig -- then again, I'm only running MAME and Daphne - no consoles (I never was a console player). The Hyper212 cooler for the CPU is plenty strong enough. And, my computer sits on one of those plexi "workbench" setups, not in a case.
