jtb1987 Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Hi everyone, I've started the process of creating my systems wheel, which is only going to be made up of "arcade classics" which will be my full mame game list (filtered using don's list generator). The other systems will be different arcade manufacturers (capcom/konami, etc.) that use the same roms as the main "arcade classics", just grouped/filtered under their respective system. My first question is that I'm not sure how to give my "system wheel" (where you can select from arcade classics and the various manufacturers) a background image. See the attached image, it's just black and I don't know where I go to put the background image (or themes). Second question - I've used hypersync to match all the game themes & preview videos...and I've added a cinematic theme for the arcade classics (main list) system. I'm going to be using an arcade CRT monitor for my cabinet...will these work? Or was I supposed to look for a specific aspect ratio version....! The third question I have is under the platinum download section, I can see that there are multiple cinematic themes for various manufacturers...but I don't see Midway or Konami anywhere - are these available anywhere else? I found the standard Midway/Konami main menu themes but was hoping to get the cinematic versions. http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/files/category/1887-main-menu-themes/ Thanks guys for any help!
Spawk Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Don't CRT's have pretty low resolution? I am not sure how good those cinematic themes would look, not to mention they are 16:9... CRT is 4:3??? You don't choose individual images for backgrounds, simply rename whatever main menu theme you DL to "default.zip" and place here: ..\HYPERSPIN\Media\Arcade Classics\Themes\default.zip Repeat for every manufacture you want to include, ie: ..\HYPERSPIN\Media\Konami Classics\Themes\default.zip ..\HYPERSPIN\Media\Midway Classics\Themes\default.zip

Yea it may not look how I think it's going to...I'm trying to configure hyperspin how I like it before going through the process of installing the CRT drivers and then connecting it to the CRT monitor. If it ends up looking bad...I'll just have to come back and remove the cinematic themes. I think I have it figured out how to configure the manufacturer main menu theme/wheel. What I'm trying to figure out is how do I configure the main "system" wheel. The wheel you first come to when you load all of the systems? (in my case, it will be a wheel of manufacturers). Do most people just leave this background black and not themed?

Oh yeah, my bad previous post is where "system themes" go... sorry. main menu themes go here: ...HYPERSPIN\Media\Main Menu\Themes\Arcade Classics.zip ...HYPERSPIN\Media\Main Menu\Themes\Konami Classics.zip ...HYPERSPIN\Media\Main Menu\Themes\Midway Classics.zip If your CRT is 4:3 then you need to stick to 4:3 themes, things should look slightly stretched on your test machine if it's 16:9.

I think I'm doing it right then... When I use the wheel to select a system, it immediately goes into that systems theme (in my case currently, they are the cinematic themes). If I click into the system, then it takes me to a more specific theme where I cycle through the games (ex. konami theme is a picture of a konami arcade machine with previews playing inside as I select each game). What I'm referring to is when I first enter the main wheel for the very first time and can cycle through the systems - I guess a theme here wouldn't make sense because it would just go immediately into the cinematic theme of whatever system it was pointing at when it first turned on. Regarding the cinematic themes - do they even exist at 4:3? And if so, where do you get them? I do see the non-cinematic themes that specifically state 4:3...but I really like the cinematic ones. Failing the question above, is there any sort of video editing software that can convert a 16:9 video to 4:3 without losing the quality?
Spawk Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 No I don't believe they are available 4:3. They were created with the idea of being displayed on current HD monitors... well ideally 1920x1080 but they would still look better on 4k than anything else out there. The default 4:3 themes Hypersync gets will look great on a low res CRT... better than they look on u test machine.

I am curious though if it's possible to use some sort of video editing software to convert the cinematic videos to 4:3.

Just to clarify "Main Menu" themes are the very first screen you come to when you open HS. "System" themes are when you click into a system. Note: Individual "Game" Themes will be displayed instead (if they exist).

Were they all designed only for 16:9??? I don't remember having an option to choose only 4:3 when I used hypersync....

Everything synced should be 4:3 unless otherwise noted in one of the theme dropdown lists. We (not me but people like James Baker) have learned to manipulate things for better display on HD hardware. But it's all just a "workaround" to the fact than HS doesn't support HD. It's actually a huge pain the arse! LOL
Metalzoic Posted January 30, 2017 Posted January 30, 2017 Cinematic themes were all made 16:9 only and there would be no easy way to re-edit them to not look bad on a 4:3 short of completely remaking them. And the Konami and Midway Cinematic themes (along with several others were removed quite a while ago. James Baker was constantly deleting his stuff and starting over etc...
jtb1987 Posted January 30, 2017 Author Posted January 30, 2017 Thanks everyone for the replies, it sounds like the cinematic themes just won't work in this case.
jtb1987 Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 Hey guys, just a thought - What if I applied a 4:3 main menu theme when you select a system...and then put the 16:9 cinematic video INSIDE the theme? What would that end up looking like on the CRT arcade monitor? Here is an image of what it would look like attached.
Metalzoic Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 Yeah that would work just fine. That's kind of what I do for my LaserDisc Classics wheel and my Sega Classics wheel They're standard theme that I built on and made, but the videos in both are JamesBakers Cinematic themes. Theme's within themes. You'd just need to make your video frame/border a 16:9 ratio within your 4:3 theme. You can see it here. First vid is Laserdisc, second is Sega.
jtb1987 Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 Thanks Metalzoic,Do you happen to know anything about Groovymame?I've setup hyperspin using standard mame 0.175 but I will eventually have to convert it to Groovymame in order to download and install the CRT emulation drivers so the whole setup will work on my arcade CRT....I just don't know if I have to do anything specific to make the conversion happen within my Hyperspin directory.Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
Metalzoic Posted February 4, 2017 Posted February 4, 2017 I have no idea, never used i. You're saying you have to use a special version of MAME to use an arcade monitor? Weird... Why?
jtb1987 Posted February 4, 2017 Author Posted February 4, 2017 There is a set of drivers that automatically associates the correct resolutions to all the old games to look as close as possible to the original and it only works with Groovymame. That's the simple version (I'm still very new to all of this)Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
