connorsdad Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 I recently got my hands on a donor cab for my vpin build as posted here http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?33286-What-do-you-think-of-this-donor-cab After seeing the playfield in action it seems a shame to destroy it for the sake of a digital table so I am going to restore it Here are a couple of photos, you can see just how deteriorated it is I'm hoping the pf will clean up. The back box The back glass isn't perfect but certainly not bad. Started stripping it down need to get these cleaned (ultrasonic) and maybe powder coated. What are the chances of bringing these back :/ The lockdown bar isn't bad, probably still have to powder coat it though And the buttons. The idea is to get all the metal parts cleaned up and maybe powder coated, as for the plunger/coin surrounds, they will have to have the chrome removed and be electroplated again. I will go over the cabinet and back box with wood filler and sand it to a smooth finish, then have it repainted with the same pattern as the original. I have on order new rubbers and cleaning fluid for the playfield as the game itself works quite well but could do with some tlc. My wife thinks I am nuts putting time and effort into this, I think she may be right time will tell Edit: Seems ultrasonic cleaning doesn't remove rust
rfancella Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 That is going to be super sweet when it's done. And I am glad you decided to restore! connorsdad Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 To be honest, the legs are ready for the scrap yard, it's going to have to be new ones I think. The time it will take me to flatten the rusty pitted originals and the cost to have them powder coated wouldn't be worth it imo. Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
connorsdad Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 Small update, completely emptied the cab and back box. Not sure how I'm going to go about stripping the paint as I'm worried it may be lead paint due to the year and origin of the cab, 1975 Italy. Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
rfancella Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Can you touch it up and clear coat it?? Thanks, Ron Code Monkey and all around Command Line geek!If you like what someone has said or done for you, be sure and 'Thank' them. And if they changed your life, send them a Beer!
connorsdad Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 Way too much deteriation to the cab and back box overall Needs filling and sanding, some of the original paint is flaking so I need to remove it first. Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
connorsdad Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 I'm afraid this restoration is no longer As you may have seen from my recent posts on this forum I have been leaning towards a conversion. I was all for a restoration until the costs started to bypass the value of a restored EM machine. As it stands; Pinball cab itself £180 Replacement rubbers, bulbs etc £47 (good ol Royal Mail £8 handling charge) Rust Remover £40 Shot Blasting £25 New legs £80 Polishing of coin door, lock down bar, side rails and plunger £80 Total £452 so far If I was to carry on with this, I need to pay somebody to repaint the original artwork, pay someone to service the mechanical parts (the only person I have found so far is based a 5hr drive away from me) and then invest even more time than I already have. There are currently restored EM machines on the bay for £1000+, I have watched these auctions end, get relisted, end and get relisted again. They are not going to sell for that price so I see no point in investing more money. I may be mad but I'm not stupid. I will put the parts I won't be using on Ebay to see if there is any interest, if not I'll use the playfield in a coffee table Sent from my SM-N9005 using Tapatalk
