MAME - The Best

I'm currently running (Mame 0.162 - split+chd) - all seems good but should I upgrade ? I seem to recall it being hard to get cleaned up when I did it 3 years ago but my memory is terrible.

What do you think of 0.162 ? Should I upgrade ? What is the best Version ?

Best version is always the latest version. 

Yes, you should update. There have been a ton of bug fixes since then.. if you go for it, you might consider the non-merged set if you use any clones.

Is it an easy upgrade ? feel like a complete noob again :(. Would I need to source a complete new Rom set ? not even sure why I labeled it (Split + chd) ? must of been important hahahaha

Yes, it's pretty easy... just take your time with it. Worst part is re-mapping buttons and setting up shaders again (if you use them).

You should generally have the romset which matches the version, yes.

generally best to grab a whole new set. Split+chd is usually advised. Non merged also possible but takes up more space.

Not done Shaders and buttons yet :). Partly why i'm thinking of upgrading for the improved HLSL.

Would you kindly point me to the latest Split + chd mame version ? The emulator not roms

Why do you need to remap the buttons and set the shaders again if is already in config + using ipac?

I'd say it's one of the easier updates you can do... excluding time to download a new romset, it usually takes me about 10 minutes.

You do make a good point about artwork and videos (and themes!) though. I user HyperSpin Checker to confirm I'm not missing anything.

MAME's config format changes slightly from version to version... since 0.162 there have been a bunch of changes.
