Harrisonm65 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 Hi all Been away from here for many years now and just wondered if there is a list or any kind of resource about the best, current emulator for each machine? Ive seen some lists etc but they are years old. I guess things will have moved on since they were compiled. Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Thanks
dark13 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 In most cases MAME for arcade and Retroarch for 16/32/64bit console stuff. Dolphin for wii/gamecube, Cemu for WiiU, PCSX2 for playstation2 . Retroarch cores are a bit slower than standalone emulators but the CRT shaders emulation is really great. There are some exceptions, for example MAME emulation is more accurate BUT using FinalBurn Neo on retroarch with "run ahead, use 2nd istance" will reduce A LOT the input lag on many SHMUPS (just check "Battle Garegga") Automatizing infopanels creation from .csv files for HTPCs themes (look at infopanel tutorial.zip on the ftp in dark13 folder) PNGs to SWFs automatized flash scripts Hyperspin Wheelset automatized template (photoshop's variables + batch) Aeon nox 4.13 W.I.P. hyperspin skin
Harrisonm65 Posted April 20, 2021 Author Posted April 20, 2021 Cheers for the info there @dark13, that gives me a good starting point to get back up and running again. Are there any decent places I can read up and learn about these? Maybe find some other alternative emulators to see if theres one I prefer more than the other perhaps?
32assassin Posted April 20, 2021 Posted April 20, 2021 "best" based on what criteria if you have a 10 plus year old PC with a dated video card. the best emulators would be the emulators your system can run with no lag. If you have a modern PC with a respectable video card, you can be running the latest emulators. Many of the latest emulators support compressed disc based loading. Meaning that you can replace your ISO, BIN,CUE files with CHD, Gzip or other compressed formats.
MarthaWillis Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 Constantly like different emulators hoping to find the best

This will be swapped for a 6GB 1060 once I can get my hands on the 3070 that I want. All paired with 16GB DDR3 RAM. No rocket ship, but I'd guess it should be decent enough for most emulators. Ideally looking to emulate old kit currently like SNES, Amiga, Spectrum, N64 etc. Once happy all that is up and running fine, I'll see about PS1, PS2, maybe even Wii. Any suggestions on what to use for those systems based on the equipment Im running?

You will have some slowdons on some ps2 games (pcsx2 sucks. BADLY), dolphin and cemu will be ok (maybe some minor slowdowns in some games but definitely playable). You can have some minor slowdowns on MAME 3dfx games too (gauntlet legends, san francisco rush, etc). Demul will be ok (when shader cache will be built). Harrisonm65 Posted April 28, 2021 Author Posted April 28, 2021 This is all ace info, thank you. I may have an i5-6600K for this PC if I can find a decent and reasonably priced miniITX board to put it in, but its good to know that the kit I have now will pretty much set me up for what I want to do to start with.
