*NEW TO HYPERSPIN* - Can Someone Please Explain a Few Things To Me??

Hi Everyone,

I really like HyperSpin and I want to get it setup on my PC and if that works well then maybe onto a HTPC and TV setup later on down the track.

What I would like is to have all the systems setup with art work and emulators and then build upon my existing ROM collection until I have all the games I want to play.

But I have quite a few questions before I get started and I was wondering if some kind soul would be willing to answer them?

* What is the best and easiest way to go about this is?

* If I pay for subscriptions to EMU Movies and donate to the HyperSpin website and get Platinum membership, can I then have everything (all artwork and movies and themes for every system and game)?

* Does the subscription to EMU Movies just get me the movie files and then the HyperSpin Subscription gives me all the rest of the artwork needed?

* What is the "EmuMovies F.T.P. community file server" and the "Download Service Utility" Do I need to use these to complete the job or can I just use HyperSync? Are they different versions of the same thing? If so which is best?

* Once everything is setup With HyperSpin and HyperSync, will this be really easy to do? Can I just setup my downloads for each system and all their games and walk away and then come back and that system is done and I can start the next one?

* Does HyperSync take care of everything? So that when the downloads are finished I can just launch HyperSpin and view everything as working?

* How Big will these downloads end up being and how much hard drive space will I need for just the entire artwork and movies for every system and game?

* Hypothetically, if someone also had all the games for all these supported systems, how much hard drive space would that be?

Thanks for your help and advice, I really appreciate it!!

Hi Striker and welcome to the forums,

I can answer a couple of those questions:

Hi Everyone,

Yes, sorta. You will have access to all the existing and released videos, wheel art, box art and themes. Not every system and every game in every system has art available. So it is a hit and miss deal. The older systems (consoles) have a lot of the artwork done. Many systems are not complete and some are not supported at all.

* Does the subscription to EMU Movies just get me the movie files and then the HyperSpin Subscription gives me all the rest of the artwork needed?

Yes.

* What is the "EmuMovies F.T.P. community file server" and the "Download Service Utility" Do I need to use these to complete the job or can I just use HyperSync? Are they different versions of the same thing? If so which is best?

Both websites have an FTP server that you would have access to. Much artwork is available on the ftp servers that has been done by users and not made "official". Those files you would have to download separate from HyperSync. The DSU will download much more than just videos. There is also a ton of artwork available, much of which is not supported in HyperSpin. So the DSU allows you to download more than just videos from EMUMovies.

Yes and yes. But we are talking just the videos and artwork here. The emulators and roms you have to find, download and configure yourself.

Once your systems are all setup in HyperSync, you just launch it and hit Sync All. Then once a month/week or so, Sync All and it will grab any new files.

* How Big will these downloads end up being and how much hard drive space will I need for just the entire artwork and movies for every system and game?

* Hypothetically, if someone also had all the games for all these supported systems, how much hard drive space would that be?

Thanks for your help and advice, I really appreciate it!!

As for how much space you need for each. That's going to vary much on the system. The older systems will probably require more for artwork and less for roms. Here is an example:

AAE uses around 55 meg for art and videos. And uses 56 meg for the emulator. And uses 1.9 meg for roms.

Atari 2600 uses 873 meg for art and video. 10 meg for the emulator and 4 meg of roms.

On the other hand:

SNES uses 1.04 Gig of roms and 4.5 Gig of video and art.

The PlayStation set I have is not complete but the roms are 480 Gig (compressed).

And newer DVD based sets are even much bigger.

The current MAME rom set is around 15 Gig of media and 439 Gig of roms.

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron,

Thanks so much for answering my questions, that was extremely helpful! Looks like getting the subscription will work out for me as I think the supported list of systems is rather extensive and I am not that worried if some of the more obscure systems are not that well supported atm. Is there still a discount at EMU Movies if I buy my Platinum subscription here first?

It looks like I might need to get another drive to be able to fit everything. I'm guessing that it could be several Terabytes by the time I'm finished. But that's cool, I was sort of expecting that. Would a normal storage grade drive be good enough? Like one of the Western Digital or Seagate 3.5" HDD's that spin a little slower but are cheaper to buy?

I am wondering if there is a step by step guide or video that will tell me how to install Hyperspin properly and also all the emulators properly? Is there an big download file/torrent that has all the latest emulators in one, so I don't have to hunt around for all of them separately?

I have all these SNES Roms and Mame Roms that I downloaded in bulk, but there are multiple versions of each game and I'm wondering how do I know which one HyperSpin uses? Or does HyperSpin let you run multiple versions? I would actually prefer to just have one version of each game but does Hyperspin care which one it is, or only that whatever version you are using is named correctly?

Are there any tutorials, stickies or videos guides that you would recommend to me at this stage?

Thanks again :) You have been a massive help!

I might be able to help with your questions also.

yes the slower drive will be fine for stroage but you will notice a longer loading time with disk based systems and mame games that use chd.

there are tutorials out there but there are also a lot of different emulators, I doubt you will find a tutorial that covers every emulator but once you set up one the rest are very similar process.

I have all these SNES Roms and Mame Roms that I downloaded in bulk, but there are multiple versions of each game and I'm wondering how do I know which one HyperSpin uses? Hyperspin is very particular about the naming of roms. The artwork, video and rom file must match the name of the game in the xml file for that system. There are several 3rd party tools that can help you sort your rom sets.

Are there any tutorials, stickies or videos guides that you would recommend to me at this stage?

when i was first starting out I watched videos on youtube of people setting up the exact emulator that I wanted to setup. Like i said before, once you see how to setup an emulator the rest are basically the same process.

Well the guys already answered your questions, if i could give you a tip, setup one emulator at a time and when it worls move on to the next. start with MAME and make sure it works outside of HS first.

welcome to the forum and have fun

I do have a very good link: http://www.hyperspin-fe.com/forum/showthread.php?29481-How-to-install-HyperSpin

Also, search youtube for Giga Guides.

Take a peek at my signature for a few guides also.

Keep in mind this: There are 100 different ways to setup your rig. And 100 people say they have the best way. I would recommend you check out a couple guides and find the one that fits your needs.

Thanks,

Ron
