The HyperSpin 2 beta is here!

We’re starting the first public testing phase with Platinum Members to keep the scope manageable while we test the current feature set and begin to add more. In the future, we’ll provide a version for basic members as well.  On behalf of the entire HyperSpin team, we look forward to another exciting adventure with our community.

This was gonna be one of the main reason to re install Linux oh well LOL I still plan on re installing Linux in a dual boot setup but this definitely won't be the reason no offense.

that is the 'simple' solution yes...the more complex one is using the methods i spoke of before in regards to cygwin, etc. But no matter how you look at it...if one were not to touch the source coding of HS as it is and did not install the FULL windows lib, VB, and .net frameworks...HS won't work. CrossOver couldnt even get it to work properly. So, in reference to what i said in thread 13...mission accomplished. HS runs on linux through windows emulation.

Sorry, but that's not how you put it at all from the beginning! Maybe re-read your post #1 and #6 for example and you'll realize it, especially post #6 where you go praising about all the Linux benefits when in the end you are running HS on XP how about that... Also you even said that "this process (HS on linux) is not one to be handled by the uninitiated when it comes to linux. You can seriously damage your system." these are your own words, I don't see what's so hard in getting virtualbox running on Linux or how it can damage your system, anyone can do it. I don't consider myself a Linux expert and have done it several times.

This is not HS in Linux, but HS under virtualbox and this has been possible since ever, there's nothing new on that.

I have never had luck with HyperSpin in a Virtual Box. Something to do with the graphics, and most of the emulators do not "emulate" well when they are on an emulated machine lol.. An emulator being emulated, there's some food for thought! I am probably the single biggest Linux fanboy on this website, I have worked for corperations for many years and am what you would consider a terminal pro; but when you wanna play some games, you don't get a mac, you don't get a Linux box, you get Windows, end of story...

Tried emulators in VB, wow what fail.

I like the idea of having HyperSpin on Linux. I like it better than windows for something that needs to run with a high uptime.

But emulators are 99% of the time going to be on Windows. There are Linux emulators out there but don't run that well on Linux. But I a newbi with emulators so probably made it harder for myself.

Shame really.

Has anyone tried Linux Puppyarcade 10. I loved this Tiny Program. It is an Arcade live boot OS with many emulators. Ran great on old hardware because the OS was able to run completely inside of RAM and access games on the live cd, USB drive, or optional HD not required even for boot. Great concept would love to see a HS dedicated distribution like this.

@ Nemes1s This is my only props to Linux. Like most of us here unlike RAIN. When the directions start with open up terminal I want to format my HD and buy a Windows COA. What make HS great is the fact my 4 year old can hop on after power up and find Genesis Wheel and play Barney Hide and Seek. This whole virtual box thing is a step in the wrong direction. Newbies like me hear already have enough of a learning curve to make this FE work in a familiar windows platform. Or maybe Its my weeks of previous linux troubleshooting pain that has given me the skills and tough skin to make it work. I don't know ??? but HS on Linux will have more attn if you or someone can answer ??? Can Hyperspin run on linux with linux coding tweeks = or greater than windows 100% shelled on my Cab ??? If not then this was all a look at what I can do on my linux box.

I always thought that virtualbox\a virtual PC gave you barely enough VRAM to run mindsweeper and solitaire? I didnt think you could run even old PC games on a virtual PC.Am I incorrect?

Sorry not a frequent forum poster here... Just an IT guy who has fallen in love with HS.

I don't believe the question is can we? or even how? The question is what is the itemized list of hindering issues?

Does the original HS team (BBB) have concerns? IP Security?

Virtualizing is not the answer, it needs a proper port to take advantage of low linux resources. (Virtualbox is lightweight but still a go-between like windows)

Autohotkey - identified - needs a port program

IMO Technical obstacles would be trivial compared to building HS from scratch.

Facts: There's major uptake in linux in last few years.

People want to use their old computers for NAS, media, and torrents and have turned their old PC into appliances. EASY!

For anyone shy of using linux command line, it would be easy to make gui tools that manage the installation just the same as currently.(possibly from web browser in windows)

Inexpensive abundant computers are easily sufficient for supporting HS and emulators on a minimal installation of linux.

Does anyone else see a problem with tying up windows licenses and forcing expense unnecessarily? Does someone on HS team work for M$?

I would really appreciate the official word on this.

HS truly belongs in a community supported, "by donation" linux distro.

Just seems like the right thing by far.

Agree or disagree?

Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that there are many emulators that simply do not run properly under linux/wine. For this reason, linux stands at a huge disadvantage.

SDLmame is available for ubuntu. MESS is as well. If you don't know what MESS is, its basically MAME but emulates over 250 console and handheld gaming systems.

HyperSpin looks very cool. However, it not being available on linux is a downfall in my opinion. If some one were to recreate hyperspin to natively run on linux, that would be great. You could even use a multi-platform framework such as qt like qmc2.

But of those 250 system only about 25 or so actually work.Where in RI are you?

Gotcha. I havent used mess. I have a modded wii for console games. I believe it would feel more authentic keeping these games on the tv with a classic controller.

I live in Exeter, near beach pond. You? Do you have a working machine? So far I have collected or ordered everything except ram, disk, psu, and speakers. And of course I haven't made the cabinet yet.

I've thought of making a front end myself, but only have experience with ruby and web technologies. I'm not sure where I would begin. Lol

Hyperspin is without a doubt the most attractive arcade front end. Just why winblows! I heard its a bit resource hungry too. I'd love to see it working in person though. Maybe I'll set up a virtual box.
