Badlands in Daphne Issues

Hi Guys,

I have an issue with the game Badlands running using daphne in hyperspin.

It runs verly slowly and laggy and if I press a button at all it freezes the video although you can still hear the sound continuing in the background. It runs fine using daphneloader outside of hyperspin.

Any ideas what I can do as it's one of my favourite games?

Also if I change settings in daphneloader and then run the game in hyperspin, hyperspin doesn't seem to pick up the changes.

I just posted this question myself in the Daphne Tutorial topic. I'm trying to fix the same thing.

Mine was also stretching across the screen instead of playing in 4:3 like it does from DaphneLoader. Here's what I've figured out so far.

-Disabling "display command line" in the Loader configure options fixes the screen stretching issue when launched in HLHQ. This might fix the other games that have this ratio issue to (haven't tried yet)

-It's the sound that causes the game to lock up. In DaphneLoader if you change the audio options from emulator sounds to sampled sounds the game quits running right (and the gunshot sound effect changes).

So for some reason HyperlaunchHQ/RocketLauncher is using the sampled sounds. If we can find a way to make it use the correct emulated sounds it should be fixed.

So I found a list of the command lines you can enter here:

http://www.daphne-emu.com/mediawiki/index.php/CmdLine

They work (I tested it using "-noissues" on Esh and it kept the warning from popping up. There is a setting to force sampled sounds "-prefer_samples", but there doesn't seem to be one to force emulated sounds.

I tried prefer_samples just in case the script was backwards, but it didn't work. I also tried -prefer_emulated just to see, but also no luck. Maybe it's the actual module that's bad.

It says there are 172 users on here right now... somebody on this site has to have these games working right, right?

Also, disabling the command line fixes the screen ratio for Badlands, but didn't fix Esh.

DUDE! I fixed it. Go to modules > rom settings. Create a new entry for Badlands and under the version setting change it from standrad to prototype. Boom. Fixed.

Now you have to help me fix the others (Esh, Mach 3 etc...) that refuse to play in the correct ratio through HLHQ

Where is "modules"? HS? DaphneLoader?

Neither. All of your Module settings for all the different emulators are in RocketLauncherUI (or HyperlaunchHQ).

That's where you make all your settings adjustments for most things.

-Pick your system

-Click on the modules tab.

-Click the module you have the system set to use.

-Click on the module settings.

In the case of Daphne it will then bring up the section where you pick the individual games and then set all your different settings on a game-by-game basis.

This is all in the Tutorial.

Thanks for the reply. I changed to the version setting to prototype. When I launch the game, it gives me a launch error.

It says"ROM bl_hit_7a.bin couldn't be found in roms/badlandp/, or Read daphne_log.txt for help."

daphne_log didn't show anything obvious.

Sounds like you don't have the prototype files then. I have no idea where I got them man (or even which they are for sure).

Maybe Ron will chime in as he's the Daphne master.

I think the samples argument was the problem. I changed my Daphne.ini (in the modules folder inside RocketLauncher) to what is below and it seems to work fine. I initially just added the -opengl argument but it was still laggy as hell. I didnt try every game but I did try a few.. maybe you guys can check it out more in depth.

[settings]

globalParams = vldp -blank_searches -noissues -fastboot -precache -sound_buffer 2048 -opengl

pauseOnExit = true

Hi guys,

Sounds like you don't have the correct Daphne.ini file setup.  One of the first steps in setting up Daphne with HL/RL is to rename your Daphne (Example).ini to Daphne.ini in your .../RocketLauncher/Modules/Daphne directory.  Step two is to remove all the globalParams from your module settings.

The Daphne.ini file should have an entry with the settings for each game already in it.  The module should figure out the rest.  ;)

Give it a try.  Then if you need to adjust anything in the module or Params, do so after.  Many of the settings (parms) is now a per game option so you can adjust each game independent of the others.  ;)

Thanks,

Ron

Are you saying that when In the daphne.ini file in rocketlauncher/Modules/Daphne under settings Global Parameters we should remove all the parameters? Because the example looks like this:

# pauseOnExit -  If true, will pause Daphne before exiting by sending "P". If your monitor is not the same resolution as daphne, Fade_Out will not display correctly. Pausing Daphne tries to prevent this.

# -noissues is for Esh's Aurunmilla. It stops daphne's warning about issues at launch.

# -fastboot is for Dragon's Lair and Space Ace, It skips the self test in the beginning.

# version - see version info below each game

[settings]

globalParams = vldp -blank_searches -prefer_samples -noissues -fastboot

pauseOnExit = false

And when looking through the daphne.ini file the only 3 games with parameters added are ace, lair, and tq, with the paramater being -useoverlaysb 1

If the # lines in the daphne example are right, and your saying that there should be NOTHING next to global params then I would think we should delete the current params that are in the gloabal params section and add the -noissues to the esh section and the -fastboot in the lair and ace section correct?

If so, that means that the current params in the ini file will no longer be applied, specifically -vldp blank_searches and -perfer_samples.

Is that correct that those 2 things are not needed? I have no idea what -vldp blank_searches does but I do know I would perfer the emulated sounds so getting rid of -perfer_samples makes sense to me.

You could make a backup of the module and just tinker with it. I'm running a custom module because as is some games just refused to show up in the correct aspect ratio and would stretch instead and Badlands had issues. They all seem to work perfectly now though. I never did manage to get Badlands to use the correct sounds though, it makes it act up/lock-up/freeze/break everytime.

Sorta,

There is no need to edit any ini files any more.  Just use RLUI.

What I am saying is the module does all that and more.  You can leave the setting in there, or remove it.  If there is nothing in your globalParams field, the module will put them there for you.

I usually recommend you remove them, because in older modules, it would duplicate some settings.  But that has all been fixed now.  So, either way is fine, but don't duplicate those settings in your per-rom settings.

You would prefer emulated sounds over sampled?  The sampled sounds are from the arcade games, that is my understanding anyway.  ;)

With the globalParams removed from my module settings.  I ran Esh and this is the resulting run line "Run - "daphne.exe esh vldp -blank_searches -prefer_samples -noissues -fastboot  -opengl -x 894 -y 672 -seek_frames_per_ms 20 -homedir . -sound_buffer 2048 -framefile "G:\Roms\Daphne\framefile\esh.txt"" Process ID: 7420"

So, as you can see, the params are added by the module.

If you want to use emulated sounds, leave the settings in your params field and remove the -prefer_samples switch from it.

Thanks,

Ron

Check out my screenshot, it says Emulated sounds are higher quality than samples but take more CPU power.

And if im understanding you correctly, We dont need to edit the ini file. Instead, we run RLUI and under Emulators, we click on Edit Global settings and then under the settings tab put any global params weI want and if we have per game params we would like to use then we click the rom settings tab right next to it and add any games that need per game params (eg, its recommended to only use the -fastboot for ace and lair, and the -noissues only applies for esh, so we would add both of those games under that section, correct?

The .ini file is just where RocketLauncher stores your settings. You never really need to manually edit an ini file (unless you want to or need to for some reason). Ini's don't even show you your setting options or give an explanation of those options. You set your module settings within RL, but not under Global or Settings. That section is for general, non-specific system settings.

Click on the system you want (Daphne), go to the Modules tab, click on the module you're using (the one you assigned to the Daphne system when you set it up), then from the icons above you have can click on the module notes to read setup instructions, or click on settings to change the module settings etc...

Within the module settings are all your system options. Next to the options are little ?'s that will explain what the option does. for Daphne there is another tab for game specific settings that operates the same way.

Did you ever get Badlands to work correctly? I dont have any slowdowns but the game seems to act strange, in almost every scene , I have to fire before the screen even appears and if I dont then I die, it literally shows the screen for about 1/4 second.

hey guys sorry to drag up an old thread but I'm still having issues with badlands (sort of).  I can run it fine via daphne loader or as a batch file outsie of hyperspin/rocketlauncher by using these setting (this is the command line that daphneloader gives so I just put that into a batch file)

daphne.exe badlands vldp -framefile framefile\badlands.txt -blank_searches -min_seek_delay 1000 -seek_frames_per_ms 20 -homedir D:\Arcade\Daphne -bank 0 00000000 -bank 1 10000001 -sound_buffer 2048 -fullscreen -x 800 -y 600

but if I try to run it in hyperspin/daphneloader it freezes when you shoot but you can still hear the game running in background but the video is frozen.

the ONLY way I can get it to run via rocketlauncher/hyperspin is to change it to the prototype version. Therefore does anybody know what the difference is between the prototype and standrad version of badlands? Surely it must be possible to get the standard version running in hyperspin/rocketlauncher?

Not sure what the difference is. This game has always run sketchy for me
