Weird question

I have hyperspin pretty much set up 100%, YAY ME!   But here is the question, when I start a game, say Pac Man, there is no sound until until I actually play the game.   Is this normal?

When you say "Actually play the game" does this mean hyperspin makes no noise, but the emulated rom does?

Or

Are you saying no sound comes through your speakers untill you are able to push buttons on the controller during the game?

when the game is loaded in mame.   I have the game running, just haven't started a 1 or 2 player game, when I do start the game there is sound.  Also this isn't the case for every game but definitely Pac-Man.  Hyperspin plays videos and sound just fine.

Some games, like Pacman if I recall correctly, don't have sound during demo play. Check some other games to see if they work correctly. Street Fighter II for example does have demo sound.

You might actually be able to open up the tab menu in MAME and check the dip switch settings to see if there is demo sound.
