Marra
Hi. I know on HDD the usual statement bigger is better applies , but regarding ssd and the cost has anyone encountered problems with 500 GB ? Or even down to 250 ? I have several cabs that I am going to rebuilding systems in so I can split down to smaller emulators installed on each. Really prefer ssd due to noise and life. Thanks for any input . ta M
Metalzoic
I don't know about reliability, but if the drives are only 500gb how many are you putting in each cab? I'm only running arcade games, no console games at all, and I'm using 1.8Tb. 500gb is just enough to hold the complete MAME set, let alone everything else you need/want. gigapig
I have a 250gb with HS on it and all media and a 500gb with Steam games on, both work perfectly and no issues for the few years I've had them. For large ROM sets you'll need mechanical drives unless you're super rich, but even the super rich would be wasting money.
Shermo
Mines on a 120, so far so good. Have all ROMs 7z on my nas server, temp folder for extraction is on my os ssd so after the initial extraction which is pretty quick (1gb network) anyway runs great. Marra
My mame set ups with basic front end list, with ROMs are under 500 gb at mo. My HDD are western d caviar , and maxtor. I was informed that hyperspin can have a high HD usage. The one I saw was on a 1tb disc and he had over 7k ROMs, far to many mojong and sh*t on it though. I'll look into a 2tb to see where it ends up.
JustAnotherRat
It really depends on what you want to include in your setup. I only wanted arcade so focused on MAME. I have artwork and videos for heaps of it (it was completely up to date a few years ago so I guess it is well behind now) and a full ROM set. I also have full set of Daphne and cabinet style games from Model 2 and it all fits on a 200GB drive.

JustAnotherRat
Nope. I have all CHD's in my set up as well. Not sure why my set up would be smaller than yours.
griffin518
Did you trim back your MAME setup? My full MAME rom set is 350+ gigs by itself. Yeah, CHDs are really where it gets you. The current CHD set is ~350GB and the current ROM set is ~50GB. I'm running a pretty tightly curated MAME setup and my ROM + CHD folder is 9GB; HS/RL + Media is another 10GB. So if you cut all the junk you don't want it'll reduce the size greatly.
