How to get only the USA version of MAME ROMS to show in Hyperspin

Hi everyone,

I am building a bartop arcade and running Hyperspin 1.4. I have a question about MAME roms and how they are showing up. Right now, I have a 0.168 merged set of MAME roms that is working for the most part.

My issue is that I want this machine to feel sort of like I am back in the 80s and 90s in which I grew up in the USA and played all US arcade games instead of the Japanese versions for example.  My issue is that some games wont show up as the USA version, if the USA version is a clone of the parent and the parent is a European or Japanese arcade game. If I click "parent only" in HyperHQ I will not see the US versions of those games. However if I do not check "parent only" I end up with a ton of duplicate titles because it shows all the clones.

One great example is Pac-Man because it is a clone of "Puckman" a Japanese games, I had to fix it manually so it would show up... same for X-men vs Street Fighter which the parent is a European version.

I am sure there are way too many of these for me to fix manually, so I am trying to figure out how to solve this in a better way.

I realize this may be very anal of me to want the USA versions to show up only... and maybe the European versions are not even any different than the US versions of most games.. but the Japanese ones sometimes have Japanese titles and such so I dont want that.

I am currently downloading a split set of roms for 0.169 and am thinking of upgrading and trying again with that split set but I honestly don't know if using a split set will help me solve this issue, without seeing a bunch of duplicates.  Any help would be appreciated greatly :)

Thx

I am no expert, but I believe that ListGen in Don's Hyperspin Tools will allow you to generate the US only list you are going for.  Then, using ListGen,  it is very easy to pick out a few of the clones that are your preferred version, and add them to your US-only list.  Finaly , you can use the resulting list to either replace the default Mame.xml, or, add it to your Genre wheel, so that you can pick it when you go to your Genre wheel (G key).

Hmm.. interesting. I have Don's Tools I will take a look at it.. never have used it in that way. In this case would I need the split set to make it work? I actually halted my download for now cause I wasn't sure if I needed to go through the trouble of replacing my merged set and upgrading right now.

I notice that the US versions of games are inside of the parent .7Z files in my merged set. So they sometimes won't show up at all even IF I turn off parents only because Hyperspin can't see the US version file name due to it being inside of the parent file .7z.

I am pretty sure your method would require a split set because of this... I would like to split my current merged set using CLRMamepro but I am not really sure how to do that and can't find any good instructions anywhere so far. I tried once and got an error.

If I have to download and upgrade to do this new USA list I can... just trying to avoid it. :)

I did get the split set.  Didn't even think of how it would affect list generation, but like you I have a couple of specific clones that I prefer.  I ended up with about 250 titles for my custom 'Arcade Classics' genre wheel, which is a lot more manageable for daily use.

You know what a good utility would be...

1st - one that would go through and delete all the clone roms you are talking about and also any artwork associated with it from control panels, manuals, flyers folders etc.

2nd - when you are playing a game and realize how bad it is or just something you will never play again (probably 90% or more for most people) you can hit a button that does the same thing... deletes rom and all artwork.

After you get through the whole mame collection you'd probably delete about 100,000 files that you don't need... assuming you have a full rom and artwork set.

Right now I just have my own custom made xml file with about 150 or so games listed (although I have a full rom set)....I'm sure there are many games out there I may like and have never played... it would be nice to clean up the files like I said though.

Same thing with something Commodore 64....  insane amount of roms out there... that is one I that I simply only have what I need... about 50 roms and artwork.... nothing extra.

yeah that would be a handy function.. either built into Hyperspin or incorporated into a 3rd party or even rocket launcher.

One thing I was wondering though about your method... what is the difference between creating your own database with only certain titles, and making a favorites list?  I have considered making a favorites list but I am not sure if you can make favorites show up on the main menu wheel or if you just have to press the favorites button to go into it. I guess your way you would be able to create a menu item for it?

In hyper hq select wheels only, parents only. The. When you find a bad game, delete or move the wheel to a folder that says sucks balls

LOL yeah this would probably work too except not all of my entries currently have wheel art to go with them so I dont have it set to wheel only just because there are so many thousands of games in mame showing up. I am going to subscribe to emumovies before my build is complete in the hopes that I can use hypersync to get ALL wheel art that I am missing for mame as well as all preview videos but I am not sure if that works as well as it is supposed to. I think it is $40 for a lifetime subscription or something.

Well, I guess the main difference is when I launch mame all I have is available are the games I actually play. I mean realistically its not even possible to ever play every game consistently and I don't know why people even bother going out of the way to make complete rom sets ... although I used to be the same way. Now I have my mame.xml file that has say 150 games that I actually like.... out of those 150 realistically again how many am I really going to play consistently?  So now I can make a favorites list out of those of maybe 10-20 games.

There was a time when I probably would have tried to acquire every emulator and rom in existence... as time moves on I hate clutter more and more. If I'm not using it I want it gone.... That's why I mentioned I could clear up over 100,000 files if an app existed to do what I said. That would really be nice for example when you are updating the backup of your hyperspin folder... say you made some changes and updated/added things... now you need to back up your HS folder. So the software is going to scan every file looking for changes/deletions/additions....takes a lot more time when you have a shit ton of files you don't even need.

On an off topic note I've even been doing the same with my music collection. Most of which I've ripped cd's... but just because I own a cd doesn't mean I like every song... some cd's I may have for a single song. And if I'm using JRiver to randomly play all the songs from a band or genre I really hate when a song comes on that I don't like....So, I've been deleting 100's of songs lately as well.... and in my case I rip to FLAC for playback on my computer or HTPC and also MP3 for portable devices... so if I have a song I don't like I actually have 2 copies of it. I started doing this a couple months ago and have eliminated 13 gig of music!!

Get hyperspin plat for everything else and emumovies plat for puse and video media. Most mame wheels are done

Sorry.. I am not sure I understood your post. Your saying get emumovies platinum membership for video media and "puse?" What is "puse?"

Also I didn't know there was a hyperspin platinum.. is that the only thing that gives you all wheel art and such?

If you come up with something, please share it because lots of us have the same problem..like myself. Something I planned to work on later after I finish my theme (cleaning XML lists)
