kellygeorge Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 A little while back I installed mame and the roms using the hyperspin project dump. It was working fine, but now any rom I try to load gives this error: 3.bin missing 4.bin missing 5.bin missing 1.bin missing 2.bin missing ERROR: required files are missing, the game cannot be run. This is with every rom. I've tried using different versions of MAME, thinking that at some point I updated to a newer version that could not play the roms, but I have had no luck. Honestly I don't know much about all this, so some help would be greatly appreciated. Anyone know why I'm getting these errors?
scooter1974 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 It is really hard to tell what the issue would be without knowing what version of MAME and rom set you have. Is the path to your roms set correctly in mame? Check out my MAME Arcade classics themes!
rastan Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 normally that happens when you're not using the right version of mame.... but you said the roms were working fine before so I don't know
DoomMaster Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 What version of MAMEuifx should we be using? I am using version 0.170.1 (Jan 29, 2016) and most games work fine. A few of the games give an error message like - one or more of the roms not dumped correctly, graphics not 100% sound not 100% - but the games load, pass all their tests, and play fine.
DoomMaster Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 Some coin op games, like neogeo games, require a parent rom folder or they will give you that kind of error. Make sure that you have not deleted that folder. For neogeo games, the folder should be named neogeo, and the parent rom file should be unzipped into that folder. Leave the game roms zipped. All neogeo games will be able to use that same parent rom folder, just as long as you named it neogeo. There are other coin op games that require a parent rom folder too, Sidewinder comes to mind. Sometimes a game rom gets corrupted during the download process. Just delete the rom, then re-download it.
kellygeorge Posted February 25, 2016 Author Posted February 25, 2016 Thanks for the tips. I went back and downloaded and got an older version of MAME and things have been working ok. There are a few other things Im still working on, but I'll search around and find the right threads for those.

So for example: if you update from MAME 149 to 171, then you also want to update your roms from version 149 to 171.
SubZero Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 Yep, always use the same rom versions as your MAME version. and for neogeo roms......every rom is in my rom folder zipped only the CHD's are in folders. never unzipped anything. not even have a neo geo folder. everything needs to be in the rom folder and zipped this is something new to me unzipping neo geo roms
JoyStickKilla Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 I have never heard such a thing like that about neo geo roms
Metalzoic Posted February 26, 2016 Posted February 26, 2016 He mentioned recently coming from using MAME on a modded Xbox, so maybe that's how the structure works on there. I don't remember... been 10+ years since I ran emulation on an Xbox.
