Tempest Controls

Most gaming mice now have the settings stored in on board memory, like my CM Storm inferno. So the other mice are set at windows default, like for my Trackball

and Logitech K400.

I met a guy who took his Ultimarc spinner and installed a small heavy adjustable governor to his. Any time he need to change the weight he just moved adjusting nuts up or down and he had a different weight. Admittedly he was a mechanical engineer with a boiler makers ticket so not surprising.

I'm surprised that Ron hadn't setup AAE until now? Dude it is like the first letter on your wheel didn't Tempest call you a long time ago?

LOL... Right?? Had been playing Tempest on MAME, but it looks so much better in AAE!! Wow!

Would love to see that spinner setup!

Thanks,

Ron

That is like playing Pong on a PS2. :P

His design was simple enough. Took a triangular piece of steel drilled and threaded it to fit the end of his spinner and then attached three hinged weights as per a normal governor an a threaded shaft with four nuts two above and two below. So you can have a fixed weight or a variable weight and multiple levels of adjustment. Very simple but the level of accuracy you need to make something like that is incredible. I had a look at one of his weights and it had a shave taken off the side of it. I asked him what happened and he said it was just for balancing. It would have been one hit with a fine file but it was needed. LOL. Damn engineers. :)

I took some time to investigate Ron's spinner issue in AAE. My conclusion: AAE can kiss my arse.

First I had to roll back to only the first beta update in order to avoid the crashes that djvj mentioned in the module notes (unplugging USB items to attempt to fix the problem is not an option for me). Then, the damn emu wouldn't recognize my spinner anyway. It sees my optical mouse and trackball just fine. That is, if I was okay with only being able to move my ship clockwise in Tempest. I may have missed something, but no settings tweak seemed to resolve this. Unplugging the mouse and trackball did nothing to improve the situation with my spinner.

So I asked myself: "Why does everyone seem to have a chubby for AAE anyway? MAME runs it, right?"

The simple answer is that MAME's default settings for vector games make them look like shit, and I would have to agree. So I dug around a bit, and found this:

I followed the suggestion in the post, set the display tweaks accordingly, and was most pleased with the results. The only edge that I think AAE still has over MAME after my tweaks is the spiffy glow effect, but that is something that may be resolved using HLSL effects. I am not screwing with that at this time.

Anyway, I hope this helps a few of you who may have had some frustration with AAE shoddy controller support. I did notice that the spinner sensitivity settings, which are limited to certain values in the GUI, are saved in aae.ini. It might be worth a shot to try and exceed the available GUI settings via a manual edit of the ini. I have no idea and I am unable to test this due to AAE hating my hardware.

FWIW, I tried the display tweaks in MAME on Asteroids as well, and was equally impressed. Give it a shot. You may be surprised as was I.

Ron's issue was how fast his spinner should run. :)

AAE looks sweet. Yeah that issue with install is amusing. You can install the first update and then everything from the second update except the aae.exe and it works fine. Can't say if spinners etc work correctly but the crashing issue no longer causes problems. :)

LOL... That was my first thought, untill I tried it. Simple to setup and runs (almost) out of the box. To each his own. ;)

First I had to roll back to only the first beta update in order to avoid the crashes that djvj mentioned in the module notes (unplugging USB items to attempt to fix the problem is not an option for me).

I had to do the same. I installed AAE, then update 1 & 2. CRASH!!! :( So, just for grins, I unpacked Update 1 back over the install and it worked just fine.

Then, the damn emu wouldn't recognize my spinner anyway. It sees my optical mouse and trackball just fine. That is, if I was okay with only being able to move my ship clockwise in Tempest. I did not experience the same. My spinner worked straight away.

So I asked myself: "Why does everyone seem to have a chubby for AAE anyway? MAME runs it, right?"

I have found that there are many people on the fourm that have little to no PC knowledge. For many of them, it's much easier to just install AAE and they are done. No tweaking needed.

I deffinatley will take a close look at that! If all that is missing is the glow, it would be worth it to me to not have another emu on my wheeel. On the other hand, it's nice to have all those old vector games in one wheel.

Now, to see if the artwork crop works in AAE. And see what syncs and what doesn't. ;)

Thanks,

Ron

Thanks Pole,

Yea, still haven't gotten back to the spinner issue. Seems like there is not enough time in a day. Course i'm also helping out another "HyperSinner" (or two) with their setup... ;) And trying to rename my VisualPinball and Playstation set to match the xml. :fisheye:

Oh, and trying to get something done at work. ;)

Thanks,

Ron

Kevin,

Right.... Unintentional.... ;) But well played.

Turns out, I don't see a way to adjust the sensitivity in MAME. In AAE there is a setting, but even at it's lowest, it's still too fast. Still researching...

Thanks,

Ron

I turned down the digital sensitity and another on same page. I did mine in mameui first to see what settings changes it made. I have two mice hacked which are great spinners. I did it years ago so the details are blurry but it is possible
