krazyd616
Hi everyone, noob here trying to make to start from scratch. Can someone clear up some confusion for me? I'll be using RetroArch and MAME for most of the setup. I want to run everything from Xbox 360 controllers (wired/wireless). With the improvements to HS 1.4 do I need to mess with Xpadder/Joy2Key or can the software do it all now itself? Or will I only have to use them if I setup a cabinet with custom controls? Spawk
You are sort of backwards. Cabs are usually hooked up with their own keyboard encoder. No keymapper is needed for them as all input is already converted to keystrokes. With a joypad though, you may want one so you can exit your emulators from the game pad and not have to reach for an escape key. I know it has been reported that the latest HS had working joystick controls but they really don't. The wheel will become unresponsive or just spin continuously. You can use the "start-up script" for basic HS navigation but that won't get "escape" mapped to your joypad for exiting emus. Xpadder and JTK are the only supported keymappers so they will give you the ability to do per game profiles. If you only need per system profiles then you can use any keymapper (Pinnacle, Antimicro... etc) and just run them outside HS/RL. Controls are now the hardest part of setup. Everyone does their own thing depending on what they can actually configure to work nicely with their setup. Many people try to setup either Xpadder or JTK and ultimately give up in frustration. Try to keep in mind that thousands of people have them setup, it is doable, one little setting somewhere is probably causing whatever issue you've run into. If you choose the JTK path, don't hesitate to ask me, I'll do my best to try and get you sorted. Good luck. SkyHighGam3r
It can depend on HOW you want things to work.Personally, despite any native controller support, I always use Xpadder. That way, using a universal profile, I can make any controller work with any game (So long as it has enough buttons to play said game). If all you are using is an X360 controller, that would mean you create one profile, and then map all the emulators to that same profile. Simple as that.
Dilated18
I only use xpadder to use the controller to move about in hyperspin. Everything else is set in the emulator.
krazyd616
First off thanks for the quick response. Thanks for all the information. Spawk, Thanks for responding. I had just found your tutorial when I got your response. I'll give JoytoKey a try first. Gbiz, So you use Xpadder for HS and the 360 drivers work automatically every time you enter an emulator? Or you need to set them up individually too?
Dilated18
You only need to setup the 360 drivers once so that windows can see your controller. The 360 drivers mite install automatically in windows but I am unsure as I use the logitech 710 controllers. Once windows recognizes your 360 controller then everything else will be able to see it to. Now just set you controller and the buttons you want to use within mame and retroarch. HS doesnt have controller support so I use xpadder to make the controller act like its a keyboard. Within xpadder you set which buttons you want to use on the controller and pick a keyboard press for that button. I would set the A button on the 360 controller to the enter button to pick a system and the B button to the ESC but to back out, just and example. aginc81
I'm having issues with this also. My joysticks and button are registering as a use gamepad so when I use Hyperspin, the wheel spins out of control and lags. Mapping the sticks and buttons to xpadder will resolve this issue, correct? diskmach
Padstarr is also an alternative. Certainly better than Pinnacle, as it is the updated version. Has a lot of functionality. kylecp1979
mame, mess and retroarch will take care of over half your set up. retroarch mame and mess you can use a universal controller setup for each. No xpadder or joytokey required.
