Roms crashing on startup

Hi all,

 

So ive been having ongoing troubles with MAME 0.161 loading roms. I downloaded a massive collection of thousands of games to which i have hyperspin pointing to - Hyperspin> Roms> MAME>

 

So most games do work, but unfortunately the ones i really want, don't work. When i run an audit in RocketLauncher, they show up as green, however, when i click to launch the game, the loading box opens for a split second and then the game closes down and goes back to the RocketLauncher games tab with the list of games.

 

The duration varies as well. Sometimes it will load to about 50%, 30%, sometimes cit will crash straight away.

 

I have since download separate rom files for particular games and added to the directory and the same thing happens.

 

Would anyone know what is happening here or how i can troubleshoot?

Do you have your rom set matched to your MAME version? That might be an issue...

I downloaded a 40gb pack of roms for MAME 0.161. I'd say around 60% of roms work.

 

I have, since my original post, looked for one of the roms that hasnt worked in particular and downloaded from a few different sources and have found one that does work. So im thinking that the bulk lot of roms just had some bad ones included.

 

When it comes to MAME, I'd rather get a top 20 list of games anyway, so ill just copy over the ones that i want that work and then look for others that actually do work for the ones in my collection that dont and that i want to include in my top 20.

He asked what version of MAME you are trying to use your roms with. Your roms are 161, but are you also trying to run them with MAME 161 or are you using a mis-matched MAME version?

If your roms and version are far off that could be a lot of differences between them. You really want to run matched versions.

Also 161 is fairly old (a year now) and they had some pretty big improvements starting with MAME version 162. You also didn't mention if you downloaded the CHDs which go with many of the roms.

Not having those, or also having those mismatched could possibly be part ofg the problem.

Personally I would say: Get an up-to-date version of roms (173 came out yesterday), make sure you have the matching MAME version you're supoosed to be using, make sure you have matched version CHDs (at least for the games you want).

Can i ask what the CHDs are?

CHDs are larger files that contain information that would normally be found in a physical disk in the arcade cabinet or on a CD or hard disk. They contain additional data that some roms need in order to run.

All good guys, i worked it out. The computer i was using was just too old and didnt have the graphic requirements. I ran HS on my new beastie laptop and all roms work fine.
